If you have listened to or watched any of my podcasts or YouTube videos then you have heard a lot of Kevin MacLeod’s music. In fact, if you watch anything on YouTube, chances are you have heard it, too. Kevin is one of the foremost providers of music tracks for YouTube publishers around the world. I first discovered his work via the Minecraft Let’s Play videos that I watched and quickly adopted him as my own music provider.

Kevin provides all his music, for free, under a Creative Commons license — but he wouldn’t be adverse to a few dollars either. (SMILE) I sent him a lump sum payment myself to thank him for his creativity and music and help ensure that more tracks keep coming. Kevin also does composing on commission for video games, stage musicals and film.
You can subscribe to Kevin’s latest music release in a number of ways. First, he posts all new tracks to his blog at Incompetech.com
Kevin also recently wrote a great blog post on selecting music for your book trailer — Book Trailer 101 — which has some great advice.

When I first thought about including GenerikB in the Subscribed series today, I thought for sure that I had already linked to him for his Minecraft videos on YouTube. We have been watching — and greatly enjoying his channels for quite a while now. More recently, we have begun tuning into his live stream via Twitch.TV, too. The live stream is a different feeling, almost like watching a live show on television. You can also interact with GenerikB and other viewers in the on-going chat stream on the Twitch site.
GernerikB is a member of the Mindcrack server, whose many members we also follow and watch on a regular basis. He often collaborates with BDoubelO in the hilarious hijinks of the B Team. They work together so well, they recently launched their own Minecraft server and mod pack called “Attack of the B-Team” along with several other Minecraft YouTubers.
In the real world, GenerikB recently relocated to Sofia, Bulgaria to be near his wife’s family, so we have seen a glimpse of life in Eastern Europe with vlogs about their move and around scenic sites of the city. Since Bulgaria is about 10 ours different from Los Angeles, the live stream works well as mid-morning entertainment for us as he streams in his evening in Bulgaria.
GenerikB is a prankster, a truly funny guy, and a great entertainer. He also seems like a really nice guy, which is so important for the people I watch. I don’t need to fill my entertainment time with trolls and nasty people, so it is always great to find someone like GenerikB to keep the day light and entertaining.

Growing Wisdom with David Epstein
As a gardener, garden blogger and garden YouTuber myself, I always like to keep in touch with what other garden folks are doing online. I recently came across Garden Wisdom as a suggested video on one of my own garden videos and had to check it out. David’s most recent video in on “Art in the Garden”, a topic that is interesting to me, too.
If you need and additional garden fix after reading or viewing my own A Gardener’s Notebook, you can’t go wrong with Growing Wisdom with David Epstein.

I have been gardening nearly my entire life since my Grandfather gave me a package of tomato seeds and my Nana taught me about bearded iris. I want to combine my knowledge of horticulture with my love of weather to give you weekly information about what to do in your yard, that week.
If the weather is going to affect the garden, you will hear about it here first.
Over the years I have been fortunate to be able to put together my love of gardening and television into the forerunner of this sight. For over three years I hosted Extreme Garden Makeover on WCVB in Boston and brought scores of weekly tips to viewers throughout the region. Now, with the ability to put video on the internet I can bring these video tips to you anywhere.

America’s Test Kitchen on YouTube
The folk over at America’s Test Kitchen, seen both on broadcast television, the web and YouTube, are a dedicated lot. They test foods, methods, products again…and again…and again…and again in order to come to the best conclusions, cooking methods, product reviews and more. I recently watched a segment on the best zip-top bags and found it immensely useful. I would never have the patience or time to do their exhaustive testing and thank them greatly for doing it for me…and all their viewers. There is a wide variety of info on their YouTube Channel and their web site including recipes, equipment reviews, taste tests and more! Check them out today!

“Sourcebook for cultivated living“
I only recently subscribed to Gardenista, after seeing some of their articles in other blogs and sites. I have especially loved their “Garden Visit” series which takes you lovely photographic tours of gardens all over the world — most of which I have never heard of before.
The site also posts writing on food, garden DIY projects, design and more.

“Explore, experience, reflect on the Earth’s diversity. Take a minute to change your view of the world.“
This blog (The Earth Minute) and YouTube Channel from my friends, Keri Dearborn and Michael Lawshe is all about giving you a minute of some special spot on this planet. Keri is a naturalist and Michael is a professional audio editor, so together they are starting to create some special moments. Among there first photo and video montages are whales off the coast of Alaska, Bewick’s Wrens building a nest and Green Tree Ants from Queensland, Australia. I am looking forward to more Earth Minutes from them in the coming weeks. We are going on a trip to Santa Cruz Island tomorrow to see the Channel Island Fox (our second trip), so I am sure that there will be scenes from the island on the channel soon.
Keri also writes the Animalbytes blog where you can find even more information on our planet and everything that lives here.

Subscribed 48: MMM…Cafe – Food Blog with Chelsea and Cody
A relative new addition to my food blog subscriptions, but MMM…Cafe has already provided several ideas for the New Food series. Most recently I saved a Curried Sweet Potato Apple Soup that sounds quite delicious. There is not much info about the authors on the site, nor do they post very frequently, but that is one of the good things about RSS. It only notifies you when there is something new to see, so I continue to get their recipes, even if they only post every so often.

I find myself reading a lot of material from Gigaom in my daily travels through my RSS feeds. Like many other group blogs/sites they produce a lot of content, much of which is right on target for my technology news needs. I especially like their stories can and does change society, culture, productivity and business.

If fine myself reading and sharing a lot of content from Scott Berkun, so it only makes sense to highlight him here are part the Subscribed series. Scott’s recent article, How to overcome cynicism, was a great example. It can be easy to fall victim to to cynicism in life and business and I salute him for taking on such a chronic issue.
How do you overcome cynicism in an environment determined to maintain it?
You overcome a toxic environment by walking out the door. Unless you happen to be a powerful person in the organization, it is not your fault that the environment is cynical, broken, dysfunctional, toxic, demented, twisted or incompetent. Managers and executives are paid a great deal more than the average employee and the main thing that comes with that pay grade is accountability. If the place depresses you, look upwards: the people in power make it this way. It’s uncommon for people in power to be motivated to make big changes since they like being in power.

iPhone Hacks is one of my go-to sites for all things iPhone and iOS. It covers both the “legitimate”, Apple-approved, iPhone world and the jailbreak community intent on doing exactly what they want with their iPhones. It also covers business news regarding iPhone usage, software and more. If you use iOS devices, either as an individual or as part of your business, iPhone Hacks should be in your subscription list, too.

Whatever your religion, you probably have some traditions that center on the Winter Holidays — whether Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Winter Solstice or just seeing it as a time for celebration for being “halfway out of the dark!” One of our traditions has a New Media twist to it.
Every year for the past 4 or 5 (I would guess) we have subscribed to a podcast by Grant Baciocco — Grant’s Advent Calendar. We first met Grant through his great work on The Radio Adventures of Doctor Floyd — a pioneer podcast that brought all the fun and silliness of old time radio to the 21st Century.
Grant’s experience with the Dr. Floyd podcast led him to podcasting one of his Christmas traditions. Each year his parents would fill an Advent Calendar with trinkets and he would open one door a day, much like many other kids. Grant’s grown up now, but he still brings his “childlike excitement” and silliness to the Advent Calendar each year.
Grant produces a video a day from December 1-25 where he opens the appropriate door on the advent calendar and shares its contents with us. But he also does more — so much more! Each video contains a skit, a parody, a musical number, an on-location opening — you never know quite what to expect each day — which is exactly what an Advent Calendar is all about.

A close friend of ours is producing this fine series of videos for Pepperdine University. They cover a wide topic area and recent videos include Dino Djalal on Lessons from Indonesia, Director and screenwriter, Nelson Oliver on Bigotry’s Continuing Influence and William Least Heat-Moon on Survival.

Subscribed 42: Digital Photography School
While I am not a highly dedicated or professional photographer, I always like learning a bit more about everything and Digital Photography school provides a wealth of information. I regularly find myself saving and sharing articles from the site. The tips range form hardware reviews, to lighting, to lens to tips for specific shooting situations. This blog is part of my daily garden reading and always has something interesting to say, even if it isn’t always a “rant”. (LAUGH) There is a lot of great gardening information here including articles and photos on garden visits, in-depth stories on various plants, insects and more.
If you are into gardening at all, add Garden Rant to your subscriptions to enlighten, enliven and invigorate your own gardening.

Subscribed 38: EthosLab – Minecraft Done Technical
Today’s edition of Subscribed is another member of the Mindcrack Server, like BDoubleO, VintageBeef and others. Etho is one of the foremost members of the group and has (as of this writing) 860K+ subscribers to his YouTube Channel. Etho takes on the more technical side of Minecraft, developing amazing machines and processes within the vanilla version of Minecraft — something that, in some cases, isn’t easy to do.
Ethos also has a wry sense of humor that comes out during his individual videos and also in his co-op play with other members of the Mindcrack server. While the more technical videos are a bit beyond my Minecraft skills at the moment, I usually watch just to see what amazing stuff can be done within the Minecraft environment and hear Etho’s unique take.

Subscribed 037: Podcast Community on Facebook
This week’s Subscribed entry is a bit of a departure as it isn’t a podcast, YouTube Channel or blog, but rather a Facebook community dedicate to Podcasting. The Podcast Community has nearly 800 members and a depth of new media information not found in many other places.
The Podcast Community is a place for questions and discussions, not just announcements of upcoming shows and guests. If you have a new media question, this is one of the best places to get it answered. You’ll find a wide variety of advice, guidance and support in this community.

Subscribed 36: The Rusted Vegetable Garden with Gary Pilarchik
Both a blog and YouTube Channel, Gary provides a wealth of gardening information. I subscribe to both the blog and the YouTube Channel, although I discovered him through his channel first. I find myself making lots of notes when I watch his videos. I am trying to grow more vegetables her in my garden and I find that my 40 year old knowledge of vegetable gardening can be quite lacking sometimes. It is great to have a straightforward demos and advice to turn to when I need a refresher.
