New Project: Author Introduction videos for Authors Marketing Agency

As part of my new work focus, I started a new New Media project last week with a trip to the Palm Springs area to record author introductions for the Authors Marketing Agency. These 3 videos are the first results of that project.

I think that authors (and anyone who seeks to build their business or sell their products) needs to be producing videos of all sorts in order to fulfill my mantra of “Showing people what you do and how well you do it.” In today’s world, this is the best way of attracting opportunity TO you instead of constantly having to seek them out.

Videos — and blogs and podcasts and newsletters and more — work for you 24/7, even when you are sleeping. They are your surrogates in the online world — explaining your concepts, detailing your products, sharing your knowledge — even when you can’t be there in person.

On February 7, 2009, TK Promotions in association with the Coalition of SoCal Music Organizations (COSMO) and New Pants Publishing, Inc., presented the 2nd in a Series of Pitch-A-Song™ Industry Panels at the Guitar Merchant.

A “State of the Industry” panel proceeded the “Pitch-A-Song™”, moderated by Steve Scott, Pres. of COSMO (Coalition of Socal Music Organizations) with industry guests including writer/podcaster/new media consultant Douglas E. Welch, producer Mandi Martin and film/tv professional WinJow speaking on hot topics covering the music industry.

Cooking Stoned with James Stone

I am always looking to branch out in my subscriptions, so it is great to find some new YouTube programming that isn’t gaming or geek related. Cooking Stoned are short (2-5 min) cooking video on a wide variety of dishes. One of the best elements is James seems to be enjoying himself a lot, which is always important in any video. His dishes fit within my fussy eating habits for the most part and some reach just far enough beyond that I am tempted to check them out at least once.

Cooking Stoned is “snackable content” in both senses of the term.

Make is a print magazine, but it also has a huge presence on the web as a blog and also a YouTube Channel.

“MAKE brings the do-it-yourself mindset to all the technology in your life. MAKE is loaded with exciting projects that help you make the most of your technology at home and away from home. This is a magazine that celebrates your right to tweak, hack, and bend any technology to your own will.”

I am always amazed at the great content I find in both the blog and the YouTube Channel. I don’t DIY nearly as much as I would like, but Make encourages me with great ideas for projects that I might like to build — everything from hands-on woodworking and the creation of functional art pieces to electronics projects using the tiny Arduino computer system.

Build bdubs 

This is another one of my Minecraft (and other gaming) subscriptions. BDoubleO (John) is a member of the same Mindcrack server as Vintage Beef, KurtJMac, and PaulSoaresJr, mentioned earlier in this series. He is very funny, highly personable, and also great at sharing his experiences of transitioning from his previous contracting job to a full-time YouTube producer. Not only do I enjoy his Minecraft videos, but I have also learned a lot about how to manage and fill a profitable YouTube Channel.

BDubs has several series currently in production including Building with BDoubleO, Mindcrack Server and Feed the Beast (with all his fellow MindCrack members) and, for those not interested in Minecraft, Race to Commander :: B-Team Black Ops II and NBA 2K12 Season 2. John’s collaborations with recent Mindcrack addition, GenerikBB are greatly entertaining and I always look forward to those special B-Team episodes.

Finally, BDoubleO also holds regular live streams, Cocktail Tuesdays, where he interacts life with his audience while playing a variety of games. Between the building, the talking the fighting and the playing, BDoubleO presents an excellent and entertaining channel.

Elsewhere: Camera pan with a mechanical Kitchen Timer

Can you make a camera pan using a cheap mechanical kitchen timer? Instrucable member, mikeasaurus, did. A cool, relatively low-tech way of allowing you to create smooth pans which you can turn into time-lapse photos. His example here was created by shooting video and speeding it up in the editing process. If you had intervalometer to trigger the camera shutter, you could create more traditional time-lapse videos.

If you are like me, sometimes you just want to be learning something. I am a science buff, so when I stumbled across Minute Physics on YouTube, I immediately subscribed.

These great, short, videos on all sorts of scientific topics impart some great information very quickly. Sometimes you don’t need the deep understanding of a graduate level course in physics. Sometimes you just want a grounding in a concept so you can see how it applies to everyday life. This is exactly what Minute Physics provides.

Real World Example: Lorilyn Salamanca hosts “Foundations for Healthy Generations” on Hawaii Public Access

Lorilyn Salamanca has been a close friend of ours since she was completing her Master’s Degree at nearby Cal State Northridge (CSUN). She was originally the student and friend of our friends, Helen and Enrique, but quickly became a close friend in her own right.

Lorilyn has heard me preaching the New Media gospel for years now, and I have been coaching, consulting and cajoling her to use her own talents to get the word out about those issues which most concern her. Since moving to Hawaii over 8 years ago, she has worked for the WIC program, helping underprivileged families raise healthy kids.

Just today Lorilyn let me know that she had stepped up her New Media “visibility” — as I have been pushing her for years — and is now the host of “Foundations for Healthy Generations” on the Hawaii Public Access channel, ‘Olelo. Like all good Public Access programs, ‘Olelo also makes all their shows available, on demand, from their web site. They can also be easily shared and embedded in blogs and other web sites.

It is so great seeing Lorilyn extend her influence using a combination of traditional media and new media on the island. I wish her great success! This is exactly the type of Real World Example I would love to see other’s pursuing.

Subscribed 008: GardenforkTV with Eric Rochow

I have been watching Eric Rochow and GardenforkTV for a long time. He first caught my eye with some excellent videos on all sorts of gardening and food topics and more recently he has expanded to Gardenfork Radio — a long form talk and interview audio podcast that is perfect for listening in the car. 

Gardenfork is a fairly eclectic channel and podcast, covering everything from Eric’s boisterous Labradors to who to make the perfect mashed potatoes to building raised beds to beekeeping. Eric has an infectious, unassuming manner which makes you feel like you would love to have him for a neighbor in the country. The show splits its time between his and his wife’s (the “camera operator”) apartment in Brooklyn and their farm in rural Connecticut.

You can subscribe to the GardenforkTV YouTube Channel for all the videos or subscribe to the video podcast using iTunes and/or ths Gardenfork Radio audio podcasts. I subscribe to both podcasts, as I love to see most everything Eric produces.

Is that a production studio in your pocket? – Logitech’s New WiFI webcam works w/ iPad/iPhone/Mac

So, it looks like Logitech has been watching a lot of uStream and a lot of Google Hangouts lately. Their new webcam, the Logitech Broadcaster ($199 US) , is a WiFi connected webcam that allows for secondary angles during your web stream. It can also record that second angle to be used for a later edit in iMovie. The Logitech Broadcaster can be controlled from an iPad, iPhone or your Mac and you can use a combination of all the available cameras in your stream or recording.

The case of the Logitech Broadcaster does double-duty as a magnetic base for the camera, allow you to position it where you need. It doesn’t look like it has a traditional tripod mount, but that is a little hard to see from the video and pictures provided.

If you are looking to take your web streams and video productions to another level, the Logitech Broadcaster could be an interesting piece of kit to add to your gig bag.

Subscribed 007: Cool Hunting

Who doesn’t like some “cool” in their lives? Cool Hunting provides a regular dose of cool through its video series highlighting cool stuff in design, art, engineering and more. Cool Hunting is available both as a YouTube channel and a podcast via their web site. The videos are high-quality and shot with an eye towards the artistic while giving you insight into the people involved in the projects.

I highly recommend Cool Hunting as a refreshing bit of entertainment for your mind. Hopefully it can spur you to some “cool” projects of your own.

Video: Using Chirp to Enhance Your Podcasts

I came across this new iPhone app, Chirp,  last night in my usual Internet reading and it got me to thinking immediately — couldn’t this app be used to create enhanced podcasts that automatically directed listeners to web sites, photos, notes and more at specific points in the show. This is my short demo on how it might be done.

This certainly wasn’t something that the creators Chirp.io were thinking about when creating the app, but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t use it to our (i.e. podcasters) advantage.

Watch the #KitchenParty! A food show recorded using latest New Media tool — Google Hangouts on Air

The recording of our Thursday, September 20, 2012 episode of KitchenParty is now online.

I am part of the crew for this new foodie show sponsored by Bakespace.com. We are using Google Hangouts to hold a conversation based around some food topic each Thursday night at 5pm PDT/8pm EDT.

Google Hangouts are one of the newest New Media kids on the block and lots of people are taking advantage of them for both personal and more professional shows. Hangouts integrate directly with YouTube. This means that once your Hangout On Air completes, it is automatically uploaded to your YouTube Channel without any further action from you. For large files, like this one hour show, this cuts out a lot of the traditional editing and rendering required for  a traditionally recorded show.

Hangouts give you a simple to use place to record conversations with up to 10 people at once, which is nearly perfect if you are doing a show like KitchenParty. One more tool for your New Media toolbox.
