YouTube rolls out Video Chapters so you can find exactly what you want in a video via Mashable!

One of my videos with chapters. See the description for an example of how to specify the chapters in the timeline.

For the past few weeks, you may have noticed something new on videos from some of your favorite YouTubers.

If you hovered over the timeline of certain YouTuber’s videos, you’d see the timeline was split up into sections. If you hovered over a section, a brief description of what was contained in that timeframe would come up. Pretty nifty if you were looking for a specific topic of discussion within a longer video.

DaVinci Resolve 15 is a free, Hollywood-grade video editor via Engadget

Free software is usually worth looking at, even if it might not meet all your needs. Download this video editor software available for both Windows and Macintosh. — Douglas

With the latest release of DaVinci Resolve 15, Blackmagic Design has radically made over its editing suite to create one of the best video-editing systems at any price — even against mainstream options like Premiere Pro CC and Apple’s Final Cut Pro X. It now comes with Fusion, a powerful visual effects (VFX) app used in Hollywood films, along with an excellent color corrector and audio editor. Despite doing more than most editors will ever need, the full studio release costs just $300, and you can get a stripped-down version with most features for a grand total of zero dollars.

Timbre is a totally free app for editing video and audio via Android Authority

Another mobile audio/video tool to check out for your new media kit. — Douglas

Good audio and video editing tools are somewhat hard to come by on mobile — a sentiment shared by app developer Xeus. The dev was prompted to create the Timbre: Cut, Join, Convert mp3 app after failing to find a “decent” tool for doing the same in the Play Store. And what Xeus has come up with is certainly an effective tool.

Despite the name, Timbre lets you do more than just edit mp3s: you can split and join audio or video, remove sections within a range, and combine files together, as well as remove the sound from your videos or create audio tracks from them.

YouTube Gaming is Now Live!

YouTube launched its gaming site and app today as a competitor to industry-leader TwitchTV.

YouTube Gaming supports both live and recorded gaming video and includes a specialized web site and companion iOS and Android apps.

The web site is a bit slow today, as might be expected as everyone wants to try it out both watching and live streaming.

Youtube gaming web

One small limitation I noticed with the web version is that it doesn’t appear to support streaming of videos to my Chromecast. I assumed it would have this functionality out of the box. You can select the Chromecast icon in your browser and it appears to try to send the live video, but then exits to the generic YouTube screen on the Chromecast. The YouTube Gaming App DOES support Chromecast streaming, though, so at least there is some option. I am guessing a small bug with the web version on launch day which will hopefully be quickly remedied.

I thought YouTube Gaming would automatically follow all my gaming-related YouTube Channels, but in order to follow them on YouTube Gaming I had to “Import” my subscriptions and then click though a list to add each channel. If I had hundreds of channels I was subscribed to it might get a little tedious doing this. though.

Streaming quality looks excellent for the streams I have sampled today and, even on this busy first day, buffering of video seems to be at a minimum.

Check it out!

As with most new apps, you can never be sure exactly where it will fit into the ecosystem until people actually start to use it. This leads me to try out a lot of new apps, just to see what they can do.

Today is a great day to be a Chromecast owner. Joining Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Sesame Street Go and others, TuneIn is now also making its mobile apps compatible with Google’s budget-friendly streaming dongle. Now that TuneIn has added support for Chromecast, you can start casting more than 100,000 radio stations, including local and international, as well as a ton of different news, music and sports podcasts. Oddly enough, the TuneIn Radio Pro applications don’t appear to have been updated, but nothing’s keeping those users from going to the non-paid version to get their Chromecast fix.

More information on Douglas E. Welch and Careers in New Media:

Previously in the Dog Days of Podcasting 2014:

What is the Dog Days of Podcasting?

“Essentially, it is a challenge to do a podcast for 30 days in a row.

In 2012 Kreg Steppe was looking to give himself a little push in regards to recording his own personal podcast since he wasn’t recording it very often. That turned into a challenge for himself to record a show everyday for 30 days believing that after 30 days it would turn into a habit. Once it was mentioned to Chuck Tomasi he took the challenge too and they decided it would be a great idea to record starting 30 days before Dragon*Con, culminating with the last episode where they would record it together when they saw each other there.”
