With the latest release of DaVinci Resolve 15, Blackmagic Design has radically made over its editing suite to create one of the best video-editing systems at any price — even against mainstream options like Premiere Pro CC and Apple’s Final Cut Pro X. It now comes with Fusion, a powerful visual effects (VFX) app used in Hollywood films, along with an excellent color corrector and audio editor. Despite doing more than most editors will ever need, the full studio release costs just $300, and you can get a stripped-down version with most features for a grand total of zero dollars.

Oddly enough, I was struggling with some older wireless mics today as I was recording a presentation by my wife. Sometimes this hand-me-down set works well and at other times the audio fades in and out as the presenter moves about the room. It is long beyond time to get a “real” set of wireless mics so I will take a look at this Samson unit as one possibility for replacement? — Douglas

20 MUVI X-Lapse 360-Degree Photography and Timelapse Accessory
I picked one of these up on sale a few months ago and have found a variety of uses for it. It only plans right to left, since it is based on a mechanical timer, but it is a great way to start integrating movement into you time-lapse movies without spending hundreds of dollars on more complex motorized camera sliders. It is cheap enough to just have fun with it.

Until now, battery powered projectors just haven’t been worth the effort. Poor image quality, not bright enough, rubbish speakers, and barely enough battery to last a whole movie. But the Nebula Mars is the new standard in portable projectors. Nothing else comes close.

Our Sicilian family had taken us sightseeing this day and we were wandering around the small town of Pedara, Sicily, on Etna’s eastern flank. As usual, we were viewing a lot of church’s along the way and — being it was late July — there were weddings in nearly every one. As I entered the church — Basilica S. Caterina Alessandrini — the Ave Maria began, but this was unlike the typical organ or piano accompaniment. A full brass band was providing the music for this service and both there — and the singer — sounded amazing in the wonderful acoustics of the church.

An interesting link found among my daily reading
I recently produced this video abstract for my wife, Dr. Rosanne Welch, and I think it came out pretty well. I also think it is a good example of how you can use new media to share your work with anyone, not matter the subject. It is one of my goals to show everyone —especially those in the academic world — that there work need not be bland, obtuse or — at the worst — boring. They need to share their work in the most innovative ways, using all the amazing new media tools now available and give their work the audience it deserves.
