Video: New Media Tip: Pinterest: Follow Boards, Not People

Getting the most out of your Pinterest feed, without burying yourself in a lot of unwanted information, means following Pinterest Boards, not people. It would be rare for you to like everything that someone pins, but by selecting the appropriate topic boards on Pinterest, you can get just the information you want from each person you follow.

Video: Podcasting Note: Editing a Tape Sync Interview

Douglas E. Welch demonstrates how to edit a tape sync (or double-ender) recording of an interview for podcasting. A tape sync allows each party to record their local audio and then merge them together in the editing process, retaining the highest quality of recording for each participant.

Video Archive: The Why, What and How of Blogging

Douglas E. Welch presents on the Why, What and How of Blogging and why it is important to business, both large and small. Blogs should be an integral part of any web site. They allow you to easily update your web site without editing static pages, which means you will probably update them more often.

Video: Podcasting – Stay in control of your RSS feed from PodCampAZ

Douglas E. Welch (http://douglasewelch.com) presents “Stay in Control of Your RSS Feed” at PodCampAZ 2009 (http://pocampaz.org)

It is important for podcasters to start out on the right foot when setting up the RSS feeds for their podcasts. The RSS feed is their main connection with their subscribers and losing control of that feed can be disastrous to communicating with and maintaining their audience.

Video Archives: Making The Case For New Media In ELearning

This presentation was recorded as part of the ELearning Guild’s Online Forums in 2010. I still find it to be a great overview of why new media is important and how it can be used in a variety of environments — not just elearning.

Love letters can reveal the true personality

of the individual that puts pen to paper.

Love letters can bridge time and place.
And they come in many different forms.

Sometimes a love letter offers the love of a friend

and reaches across desolation
to bring the recipient back to the world of the hopeful.
Sometimes the loss a letter conveys is unexpected.
A few words can bring the reality of home
across an ocean
to a distant battlefield.

The love can be written between the lines.

Some love letters are the trumpets that herald

the return of their author.
These letters leap across time and miles
to escort in the future.

Do something different this Valentine’s Day,

reach across the distance
with a love letter written in your hand,
speaking your words.

Video: WGA “Toot your own horn” New Media Panel

I was part of this panel a few weeks ago at the Writers Guild of America West here in Los Angeles. You’ll find my section around the 36 min point as well as during the small group discussions after the panel proper, but the entire panel is worth a watch.

Here is the info from the WGA web site…

“TOOT YOUR OWN HORN: SELF-PROMOTION IN THE DIGITAL AGE”

In these challenging times, it is imperative that writers take control of their own careers. Be proactive, “do it yourself,” especially regarding publicity and marketing. Technology has swiftly changed, providing writers with new avenues to promote themselves and their work. Have you tapped in?

A DIY panel features publicist Henri Bollinger, president of the Entertainment Publicists Professional Society, discussing personal publicity vs. when to bring on a “professional”; screen and TV writer/author/award-winning columnist W. Bruce Cameron (8 Simple Rules, A Dog’s Purpose); Zoanne Clack (Executive Producer – “Grey’s Anatomy” and former Writers’ Program student), Gregg Kilday (film editor at The Hollywood Reporter); psychotherapist Rebecca Roy (TheIndustryTherapist.com) to broach writers’ resistance to self-promotion; and independent new media consultant Douglas Welch (also a Writers’ Program instructor) addressing new media and social marketing platforms.

Panel followed by smaller hands-on breakout sessions. Moderated by Bill Taub.

Video: Tomatomania 2011: Scenes and Interview

I produced this video for my “A Gardener’s Notebook” blog and podcast and thought I would share the results of this New Media project here, as well. – Douglas

Douglas E. Welch from A Gardener’s Notebook visits Tomatomania 2011 in Encino, California. He interviews Scott Daigre, organizer of Tomoatomania at a dozen locations across the country and chats with a few of the tomato buyers, many who come back year after year. Tomatomania hosts over 250 varieties for sale at each location from beefsteak, to plum, to cherry tomotoes and everything in-between.

Despite grey skies in usually sunny Encino, seedings were flying off the lot by the cartload. All ages were represented from long-time growers to kids eager to help Mom and Dad select just the right plants.

See http://Tomatomania. com for more information on future events in California and on the East Coast of America.

Douglas interviewed by The Red Fence Project

Click the photo to watch the video!

Back on May 20, 2006, myself and Dan Klass, producer and star of The Bitterest Pill were interviewed by the Red Fence Project web site. It has taken a while to appear, but it is great to see this 12 minute video that resulted. We talk about podcasting, and have a little fun while we are at it.

From the Red Fence Project web site…

RedFence is the natural artistic outpouring of a Los Angeles-based community of artists, adventurers and thinkers. They have pooled their considerable talents and modest resources to create www.redfenceproject.com and its printed counterpart RedFence Magazine. Here you will find original works from some of the freshest voices in the creative world. Any medium, from paint to poetry, and film stock to the written word, may find a home among us. You will also discover critiques and reviews of the best creative works our roving minds can unearth, as well a glimpse into our thriving culture of creativity.”
