An Health Update on Douglas!

PLEASE STAND BY

Hello everyone!

This is a quick note to explain what has happened to me and why the blogs, podcasts an videos have been slow in coming over the last couple of weeks.

I became ill last Tuesday, (9/25) and ended up having emergency gallbladder surgery on Monday (10/1). I am home recovering as best I can, but I will probably be out of commission for about 2 weeks. It is very possible I will not be back at full strength until the month of November.

You may see a quick blog post or Twitter message over the next couple of weeks as I entertain myself with the Internet, but there will probably not be any large projects in the near future. I do hope to launch a big giveaway on A Gardener’s Notebook in the next couple of days, though, so watch that space.

I want to assure you that I am doing as well as can be expected and hope to be back to normal as soon as I can.

Watch the #KitchenParty! A food show recorded using latest New Media tool — Google Hangouts on Air

The recording of our Thursday, September 20, 2012 episode of KitchenParty is now online.

I am part of the crew for this new foodie show sponsored by Bakespace.com. We are using Google Hangouts to hold a conversation based around some food topic each Thursday night at 5pm PDT/8pm EDT.

Google Hangouts are one of the newest New Media kids on the block and lots of people are taking advantage of them for both personal and more professional shows. Hangouts integrate directly with YouTube. This means that once your Hangout On Air completes, it is automatically uploaded to your YouTube Channel without any further action from you. For large files, like this one hour show, this cuts out a lot of the traditional editing and rendering required for  a traditionally recorded show.

Hangouts give you a simple to use place to record conversations with up to 10 people at once, which is nearly perfect if you are doing a show like KitchenParty. One more tool for your New Media toolbox.

Please give us a “Like” on YouTube and tune in next Thursday at 5pm PDT/8pm EDT for our next show!

Tonight’s Topic: Kids back in school? Looking for good things to feed them? Fed up with junk food?

Join us as we discuss healthier food options for our kids this school year. Joining us will be J.M. Hirsch, the food editor of the Associated Press and Katie Workman, Co-Founder of Cookstr.com and author of Mom 101.

In addition, we’ll also publish our healthy lunch options cookbook. To add your recipe to our cookbook, submit it here: http://bit.ly/QdXNNr

New Media Videos on the Douglas E. Welch YouTube Channel

Each of my blogs has a section on my YouTube Channel where you can check out and share the various videos you see here. You can find all the technology-related videos in this YouTube Playlist for the Careers in New Media blog and podcast.

Can’t see the playlist above? Watch all the new media videos on YouTube.

Real World Example: Garden videos from A Gardener’s Notebook

I have many facets to my work life, including my garden blog and podcast, A Gardener’s Notebook. Below is a playlist of the many garden videos I have posted to the blog in an easy-to-browse YouTube playlist. You can also find other content on careers and technology on my YouTube channel.

This is just one example of how I am using New Media to get the word out about my blogs and interests. It doesn’t take a significant amount of time, but it is important that you capture events and activities as you are doing them. Having to set up a special time and place to shoot your videos is often enough friction to prevent you from creating them at all. Capture what you can, when you can, and you will early create content for your sites.

I have been spending a lot of time woking on my YouTube Channel lately as I think that this is where a lot of attention is focused at the moment. My son got me interested in Minecraft and after watching how some of the most well-known Minecraft people use YouTube as their main social media presence (and income generator) I have been applying some of their lessons to my own channel. Using Google Adsense, you can monetize your YouTube views using both on-page and in-video advertising. It takes a large quorum of viewers to make more than a few dollars, but those few dollars could help you cover hosting and other costs for your blogs or podcasts.

Software: WordPress 3.4 released and available for install

I try to take a moment each week to make it WordPress Wednesday on my web sites. This means I check for updates to themes, plugins and the WordPress software itself. Today I saw that WordPress has released their 3.4 update for all those self-hosting WordPress on their own web sites. Offering myself up as a guinea pig, I have installed it on one blog and all seems to be well

There are bug fixes, of course, but also a flurry of new features, although most mainly look like “under-the-hood” enhancements that will take a while to be adopted by the theme and plugin community. You can find a complete list of improvements on the WordPress web site and get an overview int he video below.

Cultivating Your Career Reputations

11,000 Words

While we often talk about one, monolithic, Reputation – with a capital R — I believe that there are a series of reputations that make up the whole. This book will focus on the combination of reputations that make up your one, overarching, Reputation. By examining each of these reputations in detail, I hope you will find specific areas where you can improve your work, your actions and your thoughts so that your overall professional reputation grows.

Why break your Reputation down into its constituent parts? It is often said that you can’t “do” projects, you can only do the individual tasks that make up the project and achieve the desired result. The same can be said for reputation. You don’t build your reputation as a whole, you cultivate the smaller reputations that create it. Each individual action builds your reputation in unique ways and each requires some thought as to how they relate to the whole.

Table of Contents

  • Introduction
  • The Reputations
  • A Reputation for Fairness
  • A Reputation for Honesty
  • A Reputation for Trustworthiness
  • A Reputation for Decision-making
  • A Reputation for Empathy
  • A Reputation for Helpfulness
  • A Reputation for Compromise
  • A Reputation for Clarity
  • A Reputation for the Big Picture…and the small
  • A Reputation for Balancing Work and Self
  • A Reputation for Creativity and Innovation

Career Compass: Finding Your Career North

5,100 Words

Imagine if when you were born you were given a magical compass to lead you through your life. It would always show you the way. It would show you the right answers on tests, lead you to the right college and to the right course of study at that college. It would lead to your first job, your first (and maybe last) love and always show the path ahead. This isn’t some idle fantasy. We each have a compass to show us the way, if only we would take it out of our pocket and use it. This compass, of course, is our desire. Instead of a needle, it is a feeling, a pull, a tension — in some cases, an overwhelming flood of feeling that says “Yes, this is the way — this is the one — this is where you need to go!”

“I am deeply convinced of the importance and effectiveness of social media. Like the Internet itself, which made social media possible, social media allows you to expose your talents, your products, your creativity to a huge number of people all over the world. The “loose contacts” we make online are the beginning of what I call our own global family. This isn’t one unwieldy global online community, but rather our own personalized family made up of those that bring value into our lives. Our communities might overlap in some ways, but they will never be the same. They can’t be. We are all unique individuals so therefore our communities will reflect this uniqueness In fact, when our communities are too alike, we might be just following the crowd instead of building our own community.”

Social Media Self Preservation is now available in the Amazon Kindle Bookstore.

*Amazon Prime members can “borrow” the book for free.

An Audio Book version of Social Media Self Preservation is also available

My favorite shared new media items for April 2012

Here are my favorite shared new media items for April 2012.

Geek and Sundry Channel launches today! – April 2, 2012

Update: I have already checked out a couple of the shows released from Geek and Sundry today.

Felicia Day’s “The Flog” was cute and gives out some good recommendations as well and a great segment on Blacksmithing. It is silly and fun. I look forward to seeing more of these.

Tabletop with Wil Wheaton looks interesting too. I need to set aside time to watch the compete show, but it is part talk show and part gaming show. Along with each episode are in-depth interviews with the guests from each show, which is a nice addition.

Check out Geek and Sundry and let me know what you think. I am looking forward to more from them and other YouTube Channel partners in the future!

—-

Ok, call me a geek (and many do) but there are several shows on this new channel that I would consider watching. I already watch the guild, of course, but the sizzle reel makes the other look really interesting too.

There is not a lot of info, but some of the shows listed and showing quick video snippets are Felicia Day’s The Guild, which already has a large following, Wil Wheaton’s Tabletop, which looks to be a show with celebrities playing various board games. (Which looked more interesting than it might sound), Dark Horse, which provide animated versions of indie comics, Written by a Kid, which looks like writers listening to kids tell a story and then they animate the story, and Sword & Laser, a science fiction and fantasy book review show.

It is hard to tell the exact focus of these shows from the short video, but I am subscribing to the YouTube Channel. It looks to be a very interesting lineup. The channel premieres April 2, 2012.
