The scientists running Seattle-based Oceans Initiative more typically apply their marine mammal expertise to research on endangered orcas or conservation of white-sided dolphins in Washington’s Puget Sound.

But the upside-down world of the new coronavirus and the closure of their nearly 6-year-old daughter’s school inspired them this week to launch what they’ve dubbed their Virtual Marine Biology Camp.

Maps: Where LA And OC Families In Need Can Get Food While Schools Are Closed via LAist

Schools around Los Angeles and Orange counties have closed in an effort to prevent further spread of coronavirus.

As LAUSD officials pointed out, that wasn’t an easy decision, because many families depend on schools for meals, child care, and services for students with special needs.

“Our schools provide a social safety net for children,” schools Supt. Austin Beutner said at a Friday press conference. “The closing of any school has real consequences beyond the loss of instructional time.”

We are compiling this list of resources for families who may need help, and we will update as we hear more. In many cases, particularly when it comes to school districts, meals will only be given to individuals 18 or younger who are there in person.

Our loans are through Navient. While they have a COVID-19 notice about the internet rates being set to 0%, under their forbearance section I am not yet seeing a COVID-19 forbearance choice, so it looks like lenders are still catching up to the quickly changing policies.

Check directly with your lender for more information!

President Trump said today that federal student loan borrowers can skip their payments for 60 days. But it’s not automatic.

From the Department of Education’s press release:

All borrowers with federally held student loans will automatically have their interest rates set to 0% for a period of at least 60 days. In addition, each of these borrowers will have the option to suspend their payments for at least two months to allow them greater flexibility during the national emergency.

On our trip to Milan for the 2019 SRN Conference we had the time to visit the Museum of the Risorgimento so I could do some research on the Italian perspective of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the topic of my second Mentoris novel. It really helped me see him from several sides – and artwork like this highlighted the place he holds in world civilization.

5 Lessons I Learned by Doing Still Life Photography via Digital Photography School

Still life is a particular style of photography that slowly lured me into its clutches. The gateway drug was, of course, food photography, and before I knew it, my weekends were spent combing secondhand shops for props and buying up linen in all different shades.

he popularity of Instagram has given rise to images of every different kind of food, drink, dessert, cake, and cocktail. You name it, someone is shooting it, adding a filter and posting online before they even taste it. Except for the one thing it really shows, is how hard it is to compose and take a good still life image, especially with a cell phone. There are a lot of really awful shots out there. Someone even made a hilarious video about the effort needed to get a good shot.

Of all of the techniques I have learned in my photography journey, none has taught me as much as doing still life work.
