Walking to an appointment I looked up as I waited at a crosswalk and caught this quintessential Los Angeles scene — blue sky, sharp sun, palm trees and architecture.

@gogojosephw and I stopped by Little Tokyo to pick up some of our favorite groceries the other day in the way home from Cal Poly Pomona.
I turned around and saw this scene and automatically took a picture. There was something about being someplace unique and different while also seeing a plane take folks new and different places that made me stop and think for a moment. This is one of those photos that you have to grab quickly or the moment is gone.

What is your favorite sign of Spring?

Ornamental Pear (Pyrus kawakamii)

These common street trees always put on a show this time of year. Their falling petals can resemble snow flurries as the bloom peaks, which can be quite confusing when the temperatures are in the high seventies. Despite a few flakes of snow that dropped into the San Fernando Valley this winter, these blossoms are far more common.

My Los Angeles 77 – A Soaring Ceiling, Union Station

There is something special about starting or ending your journey at an exquisitely designed station like this. It makes the entire trip seem grander and more important — even if you are just going from Van Nuys to downtown or changing from the Red Line to the Gold Line or your way somewhere else.
Like many others, I am always struck with the architecture of Union Station and the hustle and bustle to be found there.

Waiting…

The family is waiting on a train just like they might have in the ’40s. Union Station is such a throwback but I love that it is the connection point for commuter and national rail and also 2 major subway lines here in Los Angeles. What a great way to keep a grand piece of architecture vibrant and productive.

My Los Angeles 76 – Union Station at Christmas

Another place we visited with our Italian family. We were picking up my mother-in-law who was riding in from Fullerton. We walked across to Olvera Street and then headed over to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the annual LA County Holiday Concert. It was a great way to spend their second day in town and Christmas Eve.

Like many others, I am always struck with the architecture of Union Station and the hustle and bustle to be found there.

Looking east towards City Hall in Downtown LA with Grand Park in the foreground.

Taken from the top floor of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse while on jury duty today. I always make a point of taking photos from this rather unique perspective when I am here.

City Hall has always been a striking building and was once the tallest building in Los Angeles. I have been at the top of the tower once — where the tall pillars are — and also above that on the observation deck just above. It still offers some great views of LA if you ever get the chance.

A view up Grand Avenue with the Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Broad in the foreground.

Taken from the top floor of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse while on jury duty today. I always make a point of taking photos from this rather unique perspective when I am here. The Music Center is nearby too but the entire plaza is closed off for new construction.

I tend to stay in for lunch in order to avoid another trip through security and at least the views are nice.

Not my favorite way to spend a day or 2, but it is a civic duty we should all do. You would want someone to do the same for you should you ever need it.

It is also important to see the “real world” of jurisprudence and not only the distorted view that television shows us.

Going Metro Today! via Instagram

Going Metro Today!

While I am riding the bus today out of necessity — the car is in the shop — after using public transit to get around cities like London and Milan, I know there are unique advantages.

Since you don’t have to focus on driving, you notice more along your way — even when traveling in your own neighborhood. Perhaps you spot a new restaurant you want to try or a new shop.

You also get to know your fellow citizens more. The conversations I have on the bus vary widely, but they give you a better and deeper understanding of those who share this time and place with you.

If you have visitors in town, it helps to know how the metro system works so you can give them advice. It might prevent you from having to take them everywhere by car and all the complications of traffic and parking.

Finally, and most importantly for me, I get a little more exercise than I might otherwise. Since I typically have to walk from my house to the bus stop and then from my final stop to my destination traveling by bus provides a little, forced exercise. It is never too much, but just enough to get me moving and helping to fill the activity rings on my iPhone. 😀
