Another photo of architecture taken to its abstract limits. This isn’t someplace special or unique in regards to architecture but was found in a local shopping mall.

For myself, I was taken by the regular divisions of space in contrast to the larger panels and the curvature of the roof and how it effects the divisions.

I ended up taking lots of photos of storefronts during this trip. There are so many interesting and unique displays and often the stores themselves are just as unique.

What is your favorite architecture?

Architectural Abstract, Packing House, Claremont, California

The sunset created this amazing abstract light painting on the @claremontpacking building on Friday night while we had dinner at @eurekaclaremont .
My eye is often caught by these interesting patterns. So much so that @drrosannewelch will often ask just WHAT I am taking a picture of. 😀

Displaying and learning about painting should always be done in a building which is also a piece of art itself. The collonades and arches of the courtyard give a rhythm to the building even if the Napoleon as Greek God statue is a bit overdone. 😀

Another fine sight from our September 2018 trip to Milan.

My Los Angeles 77 – A Soaring Ceiling, Union Station

There is something special about starting or ending your journey at an exquisitely designed station like this. It makes the entire trip seem grander and more important — even if you are just going from Van Nuys to downtown or changing from the Red Line to the Gold Line or your way somewhere else.
Like many others, I am always struck with the architecture of Union Station and the hustle and bustle to be found there.

Waiting…

The family is waiting on a train just like they might have in the ’40s. Union Station is such a throwback but I love that it is the connection point for commuter and national rail and also 2 major subway lines here in Los Angeles. What a great way to keep a grand piece of architecture vibrant and productive.

My Los Angeles 76 – Union Station at Christmas

Another place we visited with our Italian family. We were picking up my mother-in-law who was riding in from Fullerton. We walked across to Olvera Street and then headed over to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the annual LA County Holiday Concert. It was a great way to spend their second day in town and Christmas Eve.

Like many others, I am always struck with the architecture of Union Station and the hustle and bustle to be found there.

Doorways of Milano

Who lives here? What do they do? Where does this doorway lead?

I found myself asking these questions every time we passed an entry like this. I collected many such pictures on our trip to Milan last September and have often done the same on past trips to Italy. They are always so fascinating especially when they give such tantalizing views of what lies beyond.

My Los Angeles 75 – Los Angeles City Hall and Grand Park

Looking east towards City Hall in Downtown LA with Grand Park in the foreground.

Taken from the top floor of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse while on jury duty today. I always make a point of taking photos from this rather unique perspective when I am here.

City Hall has always been a striking building and was once the tallest building in Los Angeles. I have been at the top of the tower once — where the tall pillars are — and also above that on the observation deck just above. It still offers some great views of LA if you ever get the chance.

“Walking The Night” – Columbia, Missouri via Instagram

“Walking The Night”

Walking in the city at night is always such a different experience than walking it during the day. You happen upon scenes that don’t occur at any other time of day. They surprise you. In the dark you don’t see the scenes coming, they are suddenly just thrust upon you in the glow of the street lamp or the glare of car headlamps.

My inherent fear of the dark means that I don’t often go walking in wilder areas, but the pools of light found in the city offer me refuge in the surrounding darkness and I get by.

My favorite times to walk are during the full moon or on those cloud covered nights when the city lights are reflected back to earth and night almost turns into day. Then I get the best of both worlds. Shadows still conceal much but the moonlight shows off smaller scenes and highlights.
