Transcript:

But we have the ability to change. We — that we do like variety. I’m a variety freak. I love variety. I hate having the same meals every week and all that. I want a variety of things. but there are some people who prefer more stable environment. That’s fine. For your own benefit sometimes, we need to inject a little bit of change into ourselves. Then use those opportunities — those ideas as a way of saying, “Well, I can do that.” Maybe sometimes, it’s very funny, because it’s the smallest things that can break through your thinking sometimes. I’m wearing my red power speaking socks that I always wear when Igo out to speak and sometimes just changing the color of your socks. Sometimes just changing how your brush your hair. It doesn’t — it’s not these gut wrenching, life altering, divorce-related, move to South Sea Island, changes in our life that we should feel that we’re trying to accomplish. We’re simply trying to “tickle” things a little bit.

Don’t be a groundhog from the Career Opportunities Podcast

From the Career Opportunities Archives…

For some odd reason, maybe because I grew up in an area that actually harbored groundhogs, I have always had an affinity for the large rodents and their namesake day of February 2. The groundhog is the harbinger of spring in my old area of the country and if he sees his shadow, he could be foretelling another 6 weeks of Winter, which was never a good thing when I was growing up in Ohio. The groundhog also had a slightly different meaning for me as I often saw human groundhogs all around me — people afraid of their own shadow, quick to duck back in their burrow and hide whenever adversity came along. As you might imagine, in your career you don’t want to be a groundhog. Let’s use this Groundhog Day as a reminder of that fact.

One of the largest problems of being a career groundhog is that you don’t just hide away from the difficult parts of life. Just as often you run away from the wonderful, exciting parts of life — the big challenges, the big opportunities that could take your career to the next level. It is quite normal to be scared of change, but you can’t let it stop you from engaging in those opportunities. Running away to your burrow is counter-productive in so many ways. It is always a retreat, a “hunkering down” for the six more weeks of winter that may never arrive.

Douglas E. Welch (http://douglasewelch.com) presents to the class Career Development – Theories and Techniques at Pepperdine Graduate School of Education & Psychology taught by fellow CareerCamp Co-Chair, Danielle Gruen

The two biggest challenges are deciding what you want to do as a career and then building the career you deserve once you decide.

I discuss the Career Compass method of discovering your career wants, needs and desires and then using various social media tools to show people “What you do and how well you do it”

Transcript:

This goes back to what I said about serendipity. We never know where great career opportunities are going to come from. They could just as easily come to us from the person sitting next to us at the Starbucks or whatever as they could from some formal job ad on Monster.com and sending in your resume and doing all of that. In fact, I believe that in this day the opportunities that come from the Starbucks person are going to be more plentiful and they’re also going to be more profitable and more to your liking. They’re going to be scary. They’re going to be different. They’re going to force you to think in new and different ways and they’re going to force you to think about flipping that job search over and start to do things that attract opportunity to you.

It’s an opportunity for you to readjust your course. To perhaps see where you’ve been on a path that is not the path for you. Which is perhaps why — layoffs are horrible because it usually has — in most cases — I would say 99% of the cases — it has nothing to do with you. A lot of us have been in that position. That project didn’t come through. That sale didn’t get made. Well, guess, what? We don’t have the work for the people we’ve staffed up to do. Take that to heart and see this truly as an opportunity for you to move beyond a company that is perhaps struggling or needs to evaluate its own priorities and evaluate your own. See this as an opportunity to get a little “kick in the butt” sometimes which we all need on many occasions and more forward.

Everyone a teacher from the Career Opportunities Podcast

Everyone a teacher from the Career Opportunities Archive

From the Career Opportunities Archives…

Look anywhere in the news today, local, national and global and you will see lots of discussion of teachers and education. Here in Los Angeles there is a large discussion of good teachers, bad teachers, teachers with tenure, teachers out of work. While I am certainly not a “teacher” in the usual sense, most of the work I do involves teaching concepts and actions to others. Some might say I am working as an educator, while others would deny even that, preferring the name consultant or coach. All this talk, though, ignores one important fact. Regardless of our job title, career, or day-to-day functions, we are all teachers in some fashion.

Some of you might be wondering how you could possibly be described as a teacher when you don’t work in a traditional classroom with traditional students. Isn’t that what teaching is all about?. I would say, no. The fact is we teach countless people every day without realizing it. Everyone we contact throughout our day has the potential to learn from us. Even if we only teach them how to use the ATM or how to work the automated checkout at the grocery store, each interaction is a moment of learning, for better or worse.

7 Questions That Lead to an ‘Aha Moment’, According to Research via Inc.

Innovation isn’t just something that happens once or twice and then is forgotten until it is needed again. Innovation is something we need to do every day and in every way in our life and careers. Here are 7 questions that can reenergize your innovation thinking and help you build the best life, businesses and careers possible. — Douglas

7 Questions That Lead to an 'Aha Moment', According to Research via Inc.

At the heart of any successful business is a great idea. But how do some entrepreneurs dream up game-changing idea after game-changing idea while others fade into mediocrity?

Cracking the code on “aha moments” and creative epiphanies is a topic Stanford Start X innovation experts Olivia Fox Cabane and Judah Pollack explore in their latest book, The Net and the Butterfly: The Art and Practice of Breakthrough Thinking.

Turns out, it’s not magic — it’s neuroscience.

They say there’s a way to systemically tap cognitive processes that generate insights. It comes down to stimulating associative thinking, a process in which the brain pieces together disparate information to solve problems in unique ways using skills like questioning, observing, networking, and experimenting.

We’re used to — in this day and age — a job environment which I say is ending, not rapidly enough for my liking, but it is ending of where we take our resume. we go “hat in hand” and we beg for a job. That’s really — ever since I ‘ve been in the workforce — ever since our parents have been in the workforce that’s been the model. You say “Please give me a job!” It’s even how you talk about it. When someone says they/ve hired you, they say “Yeah, I gave him a job.” Well, I like to think you didn’t give them a job. You hired the person who had the skills you need. Just the terminology used, to mean, is backward and off. It will probably never happen in my lifetime, but my goal for the work world — and I hope that some of you will be able to implement this in your own life — is instead of going out “begging’ for the next job or the next or this or the other is that you attract opportunity to you.
