I’ve seen too many people over the years be trapped in jobs that were — from their description to me — definitely mentally abusing jobs and, in some cases, even physically abusing jobs and they still wouldn’t leave. No matter what I said. “I can’t leave. I can’t leave.” and that, to me, is one of the saddest things I have ever heard from someone. It led to me, thinking of my own mind, “If you say you are trapped, you are. ” If you feel that you are trapped, that is the first major, biggest sign that you need to get out and change. Ok?

In this day and age, we are all freelancers. I don’t care where your paycheck comes from today, this week, as we all know that can change like that, right? We’ve all been there. You need to think of yourself as a freelancer and say “This is my client right now and I’m doing the best work I can do for that client, but I also need to be looking out down the road. Looking out for new opportunities, Building new clients. Building new aspects of my freelance career. Whatever.” You need to be thinking that way.

The last few weeks provided yet another instance of an on-the-job meltdown as a JetBlue flight attendant finally reached the breaking point of their customer service career. The only amazing thing about this, though, is that is doesn’t happen with more frequency. Job stress, economic pressures and career stagnation all contribute to worker meltdowns and yet very little is ever done to remedy the underlying problems. While on-the-job meltdowns aren’t the most productive way of dealing with the issues, it is inevitable when management offers so few productive ways of addressing problems.

As we all know, it’s a crazy world out there. On most days, we run from home to school to work to home to bed in what seems like an endless cycle. We might read lots about needing to balance our work and ‘real’ life, but never seem to get anywhere near it. In some cases, we burn ourselves up searching for the next big score, the next big promotion, the next big stack of money. While I am not saying that work, money and fulfillment aren’t important, it is just as important to remember to decompress — to slow down and engage in our present lives. There are times, in the madness of our lives, when we get clear signs it is time to stop and settle, but too often we choose to ignore them.

ANd the fact is, if they want to know that answer, I can guarantee you — times it by 10, times it by 100, times it by 1000 in the era of the Internet — other people out there want to know that same answer.

There is no longer a reason these days not to have your own “reel” as they call it and that “reel” doesn’t just apply to the entertainment industry, ok, it applies to everything that we do. You need that reel. You need those things, those interesting things to show people. Go out there and start doing it. Take something that really interests you and start doing it. then you’re going to generate interesting stuff that you can share out there and start to share them with people and hopefully start to attach and start to bring that opportunity to you. Again, you just want to have people say “Hey, have you heard about “ummmph”? “I know someone who does “blah.” You never know where that’s going to lead. You really don’t.
