Just-In-Time Learning - October 27, 2006

How often do you know everything about a job or project before you walk through the door? How often do you know everything about a piece of hardware or software before you have to install it or, even more likely, teach it to someone else? The world moves too quickly these days to possibly learn everything we need to know, before we need it. In today's world, we are often deeply engaged in more "just-in-time" learning than ever before. So, how does one survive in a world where we are learning and teaching at the same time? Oddly enough, to be successful at just-in-time learning, you actually have to make many preparations. The Rules - from the archives

As I move through my high-tech career, a series of rules have developed over time. Sometimes it is a rule for how to go about solving a particular technical problem. Other rules deal with how I work (and play) with those around me. Whatever the focus, though, these rules were not developed at some high-level strategy meeting. They were developed over time, layer by layer, like an oyster develops a pearl. This has many advantages. Instead of being based on some ideal goal and purpose, these rules have developed out of the day-to-day reality of working in a high-tech career. In no particular order, here are the rules that I find myself living with on a daily basis. Your list will certainly be different, but hopefully this will spur you to analyze and create one for yourself. [Continue Reading]

Elsewhere Online: Give your resume a face lift

LifeClever has a great article on resumes, strictly from the direction of typographies and readability. If you still need to produce paper resumes, this is a great way to give yours a bit of a polish. Again, this article isn't about what to include in your resume, only how to make it look a little bit better.

Give your resume a face lift - October 24, 2006 by Chanpory

After avoiding the 7 deadly sins of resume design, you may be asking, "If I can't use crazy colors, clip art, and other types of decoration, how do I make my resume stand out from the crowd?" Like many things, the answer lies in the details.

Even if you can't hire a fancy designer and are stuck with Microsoft Word, a few tweaks can turn your blase resume into an elegant and functional showpiece. (Continues)

Making the professional personal - October 20, 2006

One of the best ways to build your business, and your career, is to focus not on the business itself, but on the one, unique item you have to sell...yourself. Making your profession personal means giving your clients a direct and personal connection to the work you do. The professional/personal concept came to mind during one of my monthly Career-Op Skypecasts. These are open teleconferences where readers and podcast listeners can ask questions of myself and other attendees. On two separate occasions, I have been asked what workers can do to protect themselves against outsourcing and layoffs. While my own work situation as a freelancer is unique, I believe that others can make use of some of my methods. [Continue Reading]

When your sixty-four - from the archives

Having just celebrated my 39th birthday (really, not like Jack Benny), I find myself looking at the world, and my high-tech career, a little differently every day. Little by little, I have realized that no matter how much I love my work, I probably don't want to be toting computers and climbing under desks when I am in my 50's. From now on, any evaluation of my career will involve thinking of what I need to do in the next 10 years to make sure that I am not trying to have the career of a 30-year-old when I am 60. Maybe you are only in your 20's or 30's today, but you would be wise to consider, even in the smallest way, where you might want to be in 20 years. [Continue Reading]

Looking toward 2007

Hello all,

Since I write on an advanced schedule for the magazine, I am rapidly approaching the end of the year for Career-Op.

Seeing 2007 approaching so quickly, I wanted to open up a conversation about what you would like to see covered/addressed in the coming year. My thinking so far has been working on a collection of themes to focus on throughout the year, all based along the main theme of "Helping to Build the Career You Deserve."

I would love to hear what's on your mind when it comes to career issues. I am also planning on making a bigger push in talking to workers of all types myself. This should, hopefully, result in some more interviews for the Career-Op feed.

Here are some questions that are bouncing around in my mind. Maybe that might spur some thoughts that you can pass on to me.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts! -- Douglas

  • Are their any new ethical issues surfacing in the work world that make it difficult to work for your company?

  • What issues do you see with the increasing lack of loyalty between company and employee? Is their a lack of loyalty at all? Do you have another take on this issue?

  • What are your biggest issues in the job search process? Finding job openings?, Resumes? Interviewing? Lack of response? Quiz-based interview process?

  • What is your most pressing career question? Can I help you think about it? Can the other listeners/readers of Career-Op? Have you shared it in the forum?

  • What were your favorite/least favorite columns in 2006?

(Hint: all of them are available at http://welchwrite.com/career/, if you want to refresh you memory.)

  • Would you be interested in one-on-one, email/Skype-based career coaching?

Knowing all you can - October 13, 2006

How much do you know about the company for which you work? How about your company's market? Do you know the names or professional backgrounds of the members of the board of directors? Why should you care? The truth is, knowing all you can know -- about your company, your market, your work and the interests of those around you -- directly effects the success of your career. Workers who are insular and care only about the day-to-day tasks they must face will find themselves blindsided by circumstances that might have been foreseen. Your job and your career do not exist in a vacuum. Learn as much as you can about all aspects of your company and you can and will make better decisions about everything. [Continue Reading]

Elsewhere Online: Ways to distinguish yourself #167 - Be thoughtful

Thoughtfulness. What an odd discussion for a tech/business blog, you might think. Thoughtfulness is exactly what we need to succeed in our lives and our careers. See the excellent blog post from Life Beyond Code linked below.

Sometimes I can be a total social oaf. I think it happens to all of us on occasion. We are tired or distracted or angry and simply don't take the time to think before we act. You can tell when you are lacking in that department if you find yourself apologizing to people...a lot...for your previous actions.

Sometimes, though, I can hit pretty high on the thoughtfulness meter, often without really thinking about it. Weird concept, I know, but sometimes we are at our best when we are not trying so hard.

Last weekend my family and I attended the Grand Avenue Festival in Downtown LA. We had planned to do this for a while, but a few days before I heard from one of my clients that they would be performing in a flute choir at the festival. Knowing that, I decided that we should go down earlier than we planned to hear her perform. As usual, I was carrying my new/old iRiver MP3 player and recorder and took the time to record 2 of the flute pieces. In fact, I ended up doing a 9 minute sound-seeing tour as well, You can find it on my other blog/podcast, My Word.

After the event, I packaged up the MP3 files and emailed them to my client. I received the nicest reply later that day. She was so happy I recorded some of the show, as she could now share her performance with her relatives which live in New York.

It took very little effort to do what I did, but somehow, in the back of my mind, I knew it would be appreciated.

What is the next thoughtful thing you can do for a friend...or a stranger?

Ways to distinguish yourself #167 - Be thoughtful Of course all of us are thoughtful. Are we really? It seems like common sense but it's not. (Continues)

What matters most? - from the archives

In a high-tech career, it is too easy to get caught up in the technology while losing sight of its real purpose. If you are still fighting the Mac vs. PC war, Linux vs. Windows, or a host of other technology battles, it is time for a wakeup call. It is not the technology that matters, but how people use it. If you forget this simple rule, your high-tech career is going to suffer. [Continue Reading]

Elsewhere Online: You Are a Leader, Whether You Like It or Not

Mike Rohde has soem great things to say about "the leader within" on his blog today. I totally agree that we are all leaders on one way or another, but that most of us ignore that leadership role.

You Are a Leader, Whether You Like It or Not

In the past 3 years I've been reading books about leadership, discussing leadership with friends and pondering what leadership looks like in my life. Though my reading, discussing and pondering, a theme has emerged:

You are a leader, whether you like it or not. (Continues)

What you want... - October 6, 2006

At some time in your career, there will come a time when what you want and what other's want from you will diverge. It has happened several times in my life and each time it was a challenging moment. When it happens to you, you will find yourself questioning some very basic truths about your work and your life. Finding answers requires some hard thinking and, sometimes, difficult choices. What will you do when the time comes to choose between your own path or someone else's? Are you ready to face that decision today? [Continue Reading]
