Elsewhere Online: Ways to distinguish yourself #167 - Be thoughtful

Thoughtfulness. What an odd discussion for a tech/business blog, you might think. Thoughtfulness is exactly what we need to succeed in our lives and our careers. See the excellent blog post from Life Beyond Code linked below.

Sometimes I can be a total social oaf. I think it happens to all of us on occasion. We are tired or distracted or angry and simply don't take the time to think before we act. You can tell when you are lacking in that department if you find yourself apologizing to people...a lot...for your previous actions.

Sometimes, though, I can hit pretty high on the thoughtfulness meter, often without really thinking about it. Weird concept, I know, but sometimes we are at our best when we are not trying so hard.

Last weekend my family and I attended the Grand Avenue Festival in Downtown LA. We had planned to do this for a while, but a few days before I heard from one of my clients that they would be performing in a flute choir at the festival. Knowing that, I decided that we should go down earlier than we planned to hear her perform. As usual, I was carrying my new/old iRiver MP3 player and recorder and took the time to record 2 of the flute pieces. In fact, I ended up doing a 9 minute sound-seeing tour as well, You can find it on my other blog/podcast, My Word.

After the event, I packaged up the MP3 files and emailed them to my client. I received the nicest reply later that day. She was so happy I recorded some of the show, as she could now share her performance with her relatives which live in New York.

It took very little effort to do what I did, but somehow, in the back of my mind, I knew it would be appreciated.

What is the next thoughtful thing you can do for a friend...or a stranger?

Ways to distinguish yourself #167 - Be thoughtful Of course all of us are thoughtful. Are we really? It seems like common sense but it's not. (Continues)
