Visibility for you and your career
Note: This column is based on a talk given at BarCamp San Diego on Nov 11, 2007.
There is a simple truth about your career that we often ignore. You can be the best at anything -- the best programmer, the best writer, the best chef, the best accountant -- but if no one knows about what you do, and how well you do it, what does it really matter. Without visibility in your career you can struggle every day, working harder and harder and yet find yourself going nowhere.

Elsewhere Online: A Story on Firestarting
Heather has a great observation here. I hope she will forgive me for posting it in full, but I think it holds a lesson for all of us. Be a FireStarter in your live and in your work. Be the one that gets things started. First, if you start something, everyone who comes later will know who you are. Second, you can make an entire life and career out of spurring others to great acts. Think of Johnny Appleseed, who is remembered even today for the simple act of planting apples.
Heather may have hit upon an excellent theme for 2008. What fires can you get started?
A Story on FirestartingI occasionally attended a yearly multi-day gathering with friends at an old homesteader cabin in the Mojave. The area is desolate, and for one weekend we bring in generators and DJ equipment, a stage and about 80 people camp, party and generally have a good time. We shoot guns at the private range and generally engage in standard desert activities: eating, drinking, esoteric conversations and taking in the natural beauty of the desert. At night it is cold, so we have fires - inevitably started by yours truly.
In this particular weekend, it was unseasonably cold and as the sun set, everyone was gathered in and around the cabin. It was crammed in there while no one was paying attention to the cold desert beauty at dusk. So I went outside to start a fire. At first, it was just me and Sam, and a friend or two stopping by. We chucked more wood into it and really got it going. Then others came out and started adding wood and pretty soon there were a lot of people by the fire. The fire was going really well and people were enjoying adding wood and taking care of it. Since there were 2 other fire pit possibilities and plenty of wood, I moved onto start another fire in another location.
Same story as the first one. At first it was me and Sam (my firestarting partner) stacking the wood, the newspaper, twigs and lighting the match in several locations. We always get the fire started on the first try. Again, we were alone with the fire, but slowly folks moved from the first fire and others from the cabin came out to be around the second fire. It was closer to the stage and dance area so people would stop by to warm up between dancing and wandering.
The same thing happened for the third fire. At that point I would occasionally need to add fire to the previous other fires.
I feel like that's what happened here in LA Tech. There are tons of people around adding fuel to the fire, chucking on their own pieces of wood. Making a fire bigger and even starting their own. The fires are beautiful and roiling. It's very hot and going quite nicely.

Archive: Reaching for the Stars - November 12, 2004
(This podcast is pulled "from the archives" and presented here as a service to more recent listeners -- Douglas)
As I write, Spaceship One has won the X Prize, traveling to non-orbital space twice within two weeks. As I watched the news coverage, my thoughts went beyond the immediate accomplishment and onto the lesson that we can all take away from this successful mission. A clearly defined goal could be the most important part of any high-tech career. Without it, we can become timid, only proceeding slowly and incrementally instead of striving to do our very best. If you don’t have some compelling goals in your life and your career, you should sit down, today, and do some concentrated thinking.

The Greatest Gift
It is the holiday season once again and our thoughts are turned to goodwill and presents for the special people in our lives. Too often, though, we neglect ourselves at this time of year. Now, I am not suggesting you go out and by that new Macbook Pro you've always wanted and get your wife a bowling ball. Rather, there is a very special gift you can give yourself that costs absolutely nothing. The greatest gift you can give yourself at this time of year is the gift of self-knowledge. Taking time to reflect now, at this usually happy time of year can bring great benefits in the year to come.

Archive: A Doing Day - November 5, 2004
(This podcast is pulled "from the archives" and presented here as a service to more recent listeners -- Douglas)
Over the past several weeks I have been writing a lot about thinking...thinking about your purpose, your future and your goals. While thinking is certainly important, all of your good ideas might just go to waste if you don't combine that thinking with a little bit of doing. Your thinking has probably generated a host of to-do items and ideas for larger projects. Now is the time put some of those ideas into motion.
Get something done
While I normally try to include some implementation time into every workday, sometimes I need to schedule a "Doing Day." This is a day totally dedicated to implementation. Perhaps you need to add or update pages on your web site or create a proposal for a new product. It can be something as simple as getting your new printer installed or something as complicated as launching a new ad campaign. If you are like me, you probably have many items, tasks, to-dos that need to be addressed. Collect all of your notes (You have been keeping notes, haven't you?) and put together a list of all the things, big and little, that you need to move forward or, even better, complete.

What's on My Wish List #10
Instead of my typical holiday guide, this year I present a selection of items that I would love to receive for Christmas. Although I am a big technology hound, I don't often buy it for myself, so many of these items are sure to remain "wishes" for another year. -- Douglas
That doesn't mean the you might not find these items a great gift for yourself or someone you love.
#10 HDTV and Accessories
I love the look of HDTV and would love to have one of my own. Of course, I would love to see some reduction in the costs of these units. I also see the ability to plug my computer into the screen as a big plus over older televisions.
#09 Western Digital My Book Premium 500 GB External Hard Drive
As I continue to make more and more video content I am eating up hard disk space at an alarming rate. In this case, I couldn't wait any longer and bought this for myself today, but it, or something like it has been on my wish list for a long time. Expect more videos now that I have the space to edit them.
#08 Sennheiser HD 25 Dynamic Compact Professional Monitoring Headphone
I spend a lot of time wearing headphones, with all this podcasting work I am doing lately, so having a nice set of headphones would certainly be an improvement. Not only must headphones sounds good, they have to be comfortable, too, and Sennheiser tends to make headphones which are both.
#7 Moleskine Large Ruled Notebook
There are certain gifts that will make people happy regardless. For my wife, it is coffee, chocolate and books. For myself, coffee, wine and a nice Moleskine Journal like this. I always carry a book around with me wherever I go and the Moleskine books hold up better than anything else I have owned. They keep their covers, they have that nice elastic band to hold them shut and the paper quality is top-notch. Get one for yourself...and pick one up for me! (SMILE)
#6 Aliph Jawbone Noise Shield Bluetooth Headset- Black
If any of you have talked on the phone with me, you know my current Bluetooth headset tends to pick up everything in the room. Enter The Jawbone, with its high-end noise cancellation features. You can see a great demo on their web site.
Items #01-05
#05 Victorinox 10-Inch Chef's Knife
#04 TomTom GO 720 Navigation System
#03 Nikon D40X, 10 MP SLR Digital Camera
#02 iPod Touch
# 01 Apple iPhone and iPhone Accesories

Two Career Situations to Avoid
At the best of times, our career is a succession of good work and good ideas, for which we are rewarded a good salary. Your work can progress along without too much fear, angst or anger. Still, there will be times when trouble can occur. Often, though, these are situations that we can avoid, if we learn to recognize the warning signs. After 20+ years in the workplace, in both corporate and small businesses and as an independent consultant, I have collected a number of situations that almost always lead to trouble.

Elsewhere Online: Getting Laid Off - Finances Rule
I highly recommend you check out this cast from Mark and Michael over at Manager Tools. Having changed jobs a number of times, there advice is right on target for every worker, not necessarily just managers. -- Douglas
Getting Laid Off - Finances Rule
November 19th, 2007
This cast reveals the most important concept a laid off manager must know: Finances Rule. it is the first in a series designed to help both prepare for and navigate through a layoff.
Most of us fear being laid off. It’s a good fear to have, frankly - being laid off is a difficult passage for anyone. The fear of being re-employed, the fear of loss of status, the loss of income, risk to one's family. All good reasons to be scared.
And yet, those who have been laid off express very different emotions than those of us who have not. When those who have been laid off are asked about it, it becomes clear why. It’s not JUST that they've, "been through it once and I made it." It’s what they THEN say: "I’m ready this time."
And that's why you’re scared: you’re not ready.
This cast tells you how to start getting ready. And, our entire series about layoffs will be geared to helping everyone get prepared, and helping those that DO get laid off make it through successfully.

Anyone, no matter what their age, can find themselves in the depths of a rut. It can start out slowly. Going to the same restaurants, using the same software, listening to the same music. The next thing you know, there you are, in a rut. As I’m finding, getting older can make it even easier to get into a rut. There are days when I simply don’t want to face the trials and tribulations of daily life. I just want to do something familiar. Of course, a few days later, I wake up feeling bored…and boring…and not really knowing why. Even though I know the importance of finding new challenges, new passions and new input, I have to actively reach out and engage the world in order to find them.

Douglas E. Welch on "The Struggling Entrepreneur"
Frank Castaneda had me on his show, The Struggling Entrepreneur, this week. We talk about working as an independent in high-tech, writing and new media.
Struggling Entrepreneur
15- Doug Welch- From Writer to High Tech to New Media Entrepreneur
Listen this episode
In this episode of The Struggling Entrepreneur, we have an interview with Douglas Welch. I had the opportuntity to meet him in person at the Podcamp Arizona unconference in November, 2007. Doug is a high-tech consultant and recent New Media Entrepreneur. Coming from a corporate IT environment and also being a writer, Doug shares with us his road to becoming a successful entrepreneur. As a family man, he does this in concert with his wife and her career, as well. What is interesting are 2 areas that are mentioned in this 40-minute interview:
1. The need for the entrepreneur to be aware of the obstacles with affordable health care; and
2. How being a successful entrepreneur can enrich your personal and family life by “buying yourself time” for a quality life.

Punctuality
With our current obsession on time and productivity, you would think that punctuality would be de rigueur for any effective worker. We have our cell phones, our iPhones, our Blackberries, constantly reminding us of what we should be doing and when. Even today, though, there is a certain portion of the populace who simply can't be on time to any event, whether a weekly staff meeting, school drop-off or dinner party. Why is this? What fundamental factor prevents them from engaging the world in this important way?

#05 Victorinox 10-Inch Chef's Knife
I love to cook and I would really like some nice knives to speed my way through onions, potatoes and other raw ingredients. Most knives cost an arm and a leg, but recently Cooks Illustrated Magazine and America's Test Kitchen television show and book rated this knife as one of its top recommendations. Cool! Good AND cheap. Who can complain with that? Heck, for that price I would buy 2 or 3.

Archive: Getting Serious - Part III - October 22, 2004
(This podcast is pulled "from the archives" and presented here as a service to more recent listeners -- Douglas)
Over the past two weeks I have talked about the thinking that goes into maintaining client relationships. This week I turn to the practical ideas that I use to maintain my client relationships and build my career. These methods can be used as they are or adapted for your own use. The biggest benefit you will gain, though, is in the thinking they provoke and the action that comes from that thinking.
Getting the word out
For years I only thought about my clients when they called with an issue. They called, I answered. I fixed, they paid. For the last two years, though, I have taken a much more active role in engaging my clients. You need to be in constant contact. For me, the main method of contact is through my monthly WelchWrite Newsletter. Throughout the month I collect interesting news stories, web sites and software. Then I add a short article, exclusive to the newsletter, that discusses an important topic. Finally, I top it off with a little information from my on-going weblogs and events in my personal life.

Elsewhere Online: Career Responsibility by Steve Pavlina
I am in total agreement with Steve on this topic. If you are working for a company that is taking advantage of its customers then you, too, are culpable. Life is too short to work for a bad company and you could be leaving yourself open for prosecution if the company is straying into extra-legal territory. Beware!
Career Responsibility
A few people asked variations on this question: If I work for a company that seems to have priorities I don’t agree with, am I partially responsible for its results?
Answer: Of course you are.

Elsewhere Online: Thanks for calling, please go away
Seth Godin had a lousy experience with PayPal and it seems hundreds of others have, too. While publicizing customer service failures can be useful, it begs the question, "What is the next step?" How do we get companies to "feel our pain" and actually change the way they operate?
Frequently, there seems to be no way to resolve the issues until the situation gets so bad the company finally goes out of business. This seems a ridiculous situation when, theoretically, these companies are supposed to be working for us.
One another note, how do people continue to work for companies where their entire job is obfuscation, delay and deny? I can't imagine they would like the tactics were they the focus of behavior similar to that they dish out on a daily basis. We, as workers, are responsible for the continued dismal state of business if we don't refuse to work for companies that abuse their customers.
Thanks for calling, please go awayMost customer service organizations are architected around a simple idea: interacting with customers is expensive, driving costs down is a good thing, thus getting people to go away is beneficial.

Always-on web connectivity, cell phone, music/video player and PDA in one. Who could ask for anything more? Especially since the big price cut a few months ago.

What's on my Wish List #01
Instead of my typical holiday guide, I present a selection of items that I would love to receive this Christmas. Although I am a big technology hound, I don't often buy it for myself, so many of these items are sure to remain "wishes" for another year. -- Douglas
That doesn't mean the you might not find these items a great gift for yourself or someone you love.

The Wish Book - Starts December 1st
Remember the Christmas catalogs of the past. They were often called Wish Books and I and my sisters would spend hours pouring over them "wishing" for almost everything. Friends in Tech has collected a series of stories and memories about the Wish Book and is presenting them throughout the month of December.
Hear the stories on Friends in Tech.com, subscribe to the Friends in Tech RSS feed using your favorite RSS reader or subscribe in iTunes to get every episode automatically.
If you hurry, you can even share your own Wish Book memories.
Hurry, though, Christmas is almost here!
