What do you do with your newspaper when you’re done reading it? Put it in the recycle bin? Save it for packing paper? Well, one Japanese publishing company wanted you to be able to grow herbs with it! The “Green Newspaper” was invented by the publisher of the famous Japanese daily, The Mainichi Shimbunsha. Published for “Greenery Day” on May 4, 2016, the special edition dedicated to environmental news was printed on 100% biodegradable paper with plant-based ink, and embedded with seeds that, when planted, would grow into flowers to attract butterflies and other pollinators, or herbs to eat. The publisher instructed people to tear the discarded newspaper into small pieces, plant the shreds in soil, and then water the container as they would any plant.

‘Cyborg soil’ reveals the secret microbial metropolis beneath our feet

Dig a teaspoon into your nearest clump of soil, and what you’ll emerge with will contain more microorganisms than there are people on Earth. We know this from lab studies that analyse samples of earth scooped from the microbial wild to determine which forms of microscopic life exist in the world beneath our feet.

The problem is, such studies can’t actually tell us how this subterranean kingdom of fungi, flagellates and amoebae operates in the ground. Because they entail the removal of soil from its environment, these studies destroy the delicate structures of mud, water and air in which the soil microbes reside.

This prompted my lab to develop a way to spy on these underground workers, who are indispensable in their role as organic matter recycling agents, without disturbing their micro-habitats.

Our study revealed the dark, dank cities in which soil microbes reside. We found labyrinths of tiny highways, skyscrapers, bridges and rivers which are navigated by microorganisms to find food, or to avoid becoming someone’s next meal. This new window into what’s happening underground could help us better appreciate and preserve Earth’s increasingly damaged soils.

If you have a garden and can afford a small corner of space, then making your own compost is one of the most environmentally sound practices you can do.

It gives you a handy way of disposing of garden and kitchen waste, provides you with nutrient-rich compost that will feed your plants and improve the soil, and also helps keep armies of worms and bugs happy as they get on with the work.

At its simplest, all you need to do is create a pile of suitable material and, with minimal effort, it’ll, eventually turn into compost if you give it a year or two.

Read Hugelkultur in progress – first attempt. I’m sure mistakes were made, but I had fun building my HILL 🙂 I used up all of the rotten logs from the firewood pile. Some of them fell apart by the touch. I am hopeful.

DIY Two-Bin Composter via Grit

All serious gardeners acknowledge the undeniable benefits of compost, and most maintain their own compost-bin system. If you want to join their ranks, you’ll need a system that can handle a large volume of material and allow easy access to finished compost. Serious gardeners tend to have lots of material from plant clippings and weeds, but they also seek out compost fodder from outside sources. They grab extra coffee grounds from the local coffee shop, and happily accept bags of their neighbors’ leaves.

Having a multiple-bin system allows gardeners to move partially composted material from the first bin into the second before filling up the first bin again. This movement aerates the pile and speeds decomposition, something very important to gardeners who not only have a large amount of material to handle, but also clamor for the finished product to use in their gardens.
