Elsewhere: Terra Cotta Garden Bed Borders

You may have seen my past posts and videos about using wine bottles for garden borders. Here is another take on borders using terra cotta drainage tiles, set on end, to frame a garden border. One of the advantages, of course, is you can plant inside each tile as well as in the bed itself. This could make for some nice living borders spilling out over the border and into your paths.

Since these tiles are made from terra cotta, it probably isn’t a good idea for those areas where the ground freezes in the Winter. I think the freezing and thawing would quickly crack these tiles, even in as little as one Winter season, so be aware of that. Perhaps you can substitute with a similar looking, but differently composed piping to create the same thing.

Another garden project you might need some help with, but if you are adding a retaining wall to your property, think about adding some seating as part of the wall. We all need places to sit and enjoy our gardens, as well as a place to visit with friends and have some tea.

Elsewhere: Growing plant teepee

A lovely and unique element in your garden. There isn’t a lot of information on this beyond the photo, but I found it so striking that I wanted to pass it along to you. The top looks to be covered some sort of vine, while the lower parts look like containers hanging from the horizontal supports of the tepee. This would be an amazing part of your garden each Summer and would be a great annual memory for your children and the rest of your family and friends.

SHOW 1: How to Sell a Cookbook

Thinking about writing a cookbook? Overwhelmed with the different choices in self-publishing?

Join us TONIGHT (9/13) at 5pm pacific/8pm eastern for an hour long discussion about what it takes to get a cookbook published in this day and age. From submitting a proposal, getting an agent to understanding the timeline for cookbook publishing, our pros will discuss the ins and outs of getting a book published. In addition, we’ll be putting the call out for our first crowdsourced cookbook on “Reinventing the Lunchbox” and looking for healthy recipes to make for your kids. If you’d like to add a healthy lunchbox recipe to our first cookbook (which will be published in next week’s chat) click on the “Schedule” tab for details on how where to submit your recipe.

Scotts Miracle-Gro Will Pay $12.5 Million in Criminal Fines and Civil Penalties for Violations of Federal Pesticide Laws

WASHINGTON – The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, a producer of pesticides for commercial and consumer lawn and garden uses, was sentenced today in federal district court in Columbus, Ohio, to pay a $4 million fine and perform community service for eleven criminal violations of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), which governs the manufacture, distribution, and sale of pesticides. Scotts pleaded guilty in February 2012 to illegally applying insecticides to its wild bird food products that are toxic to birds, falsifying pesticide registration documents, distributing pesticides with misleading and unapproved labels, and distributing unregistered pesticides. This is the largest criminal penalty under FIFRA to date.
