Douglas E. Welch (http://douglasewelch.com) presents to the class Career Development – Theories and Techniques at Pepperdine Graduate School of Education & Psychology taught by fellow CareerCamp Co-Chair, Danielle Gruen
The two biggest challenges are deciding what you want to do as a career and then building the career you deserve once you decide.
I discuss the Career Compass method of discovering your career wants, needs and desires and then using various social media tools to show people “What you do and how well you do it”
Transcript:
How many people know what a domain name is? A domain name’s that .now, .media or .whatever, because there are a bunch of other “dot” endings nowadays. If you go out and you buy a domain, which I highly recommend, and if you can get your name, good, but otherwise something appropriate (unclear) That’s mine, DouglasEWelch.com.
I own that name. It’s mine. I can point that name — anywhere. I can point it to a tumblr blog, I can point it to a WordPress blog, I can point it to my Facebook page, I can point it anywhere. I own it forever, as long as I pay for it, I own it. That’s what you want, because if you own that piece of real estate, no matter what service happens to go out of business next week, well, guess what, you just point that somewhere else and continue on your way. Anyone who has that name can still get to YOU. I really want to reinforce that. When I talk about having a home base. Have your own domain name and you can point it anywhere and there’s some technical stuff that we can go into further, but you can go to YouTube and figure out how to set up a domain name in about a billion different ways. The important part is to have it. So that, much like having cell phone numbers that follow us everywhere we go now, we can finally be able to transfer our cell phone numbers and keep a certain number. We want to be able to keep our internet presence as well.
