Orto Botanico di Brera, Milano, Italia

I highly recommend you visit when you are in Milan. This was an amazing respite from the city but still within the city. Bring bug spray as the mosquitos were fierce but the views were gorgeous.

A couple finds respite in the cool shade of the garden on a hot Summer day. We did the same. After walking through the garden we found a bench and just enjoyed the scenery. The mosquitos got to be a bit fierce, though. Bring bug spray if you visit in summer. 😀

In this scene we get an important lesson on how sight lines can make a garden seem much larger than it is. The leading lines of the pathway, the encroaching growth of the plants and the architecture at the end make it seem like the garden goes on for an even greater distance.
This garden is hemmed in By buildings on each side and isn’t particularly large, but new vistas were always opening up as you walked about.

“If only you could smell these lovely flowers when I took this picture a few years ago. The smell is almost overpowering and one bloom, floated in a dish of water, can perfume the entire house for days. They are beautiful, prolific flowers with an amazing scent and a great addition to your garden.”

What is your favorite sign of Spring?

Ornamental Pear (Pyrus kawakamii)

These common street trees always put on a show this time of year. Their falling petals can resemble snow flurries as the bloom peaks, which can be quite confusing when the temperatures are in the high seventies. Despite a few flakes of snow that dropped into the San Fernando Valley this winter, these blossoms are far more common.

A tree returns to the garden soil

In the Orto Botanico In the Brera District of Milan, a tree is felled but left in place to benefit wildlife, fungi and the surrounding soil. It is also a great educational tool for explaining the soil cycle and other garden concepts. Even as it decomposes, it lends a beautiful, architectural element to the garden, too. This is definitely an argument for leaving downed trees and snags in your own garden, when possible.

In a similar fashion, I use wood chips to line the paths in my garden—an method I started after seeing the same at nearby @descansogardens. It is a great way to make use of what otherwise might go into your garden bins or, perhaps, the composter.
