Various Cooper’s Hawks have visited us over the years. This appears to be a male, as he is much smaller than the females we have seen before. We once had both visiting together, so it was great to be able to compare them.

How to Make a Birdbath for Free via The Art of Doing Stuff [Shared]

I would like for you to imagine me truckin’ along, on my way to the store. Just walking on the sidewalk, minding my own business. (To make the picture in your mind’s eye incredibly realistic you might want to picture me as Christy Turlington. ‘Cause we’re often mistaken for one another on account of me looking exactly like a supermodel from the 1980’s.)

So you have that image in your head? O.K., then imagine my gazelle like legs getting tangled in each other as I do something worse than a faceplant. I do an *almost* faceplant; which is where you don’t completely fall but instead catch yourself in mid-air, give out a little toot and correct yourself before you actually hit the ground. Instead of road rash you end up with a really red face and that gross tingling feeling in your toes that comes with a startling scare. I hate that toe tingling feeling.

Planting a tree and seeing it grow and thrive is one of the most long-lasting and fulfilling gardening experiences. I feel that way about the gingko in our front yard, but when it comes to wildlife value, a gingko is almost like having a plastic tree in your yard—it has zero value to the little critters that make nature work. A gingko attracts no caterpillars at all (which are essential for birds to raise their young), but a native oak, on the other hand, supports more than 550 species of caterpillars. According to Doug Tallamy, a professor of entomology and wildlife ecology at the University of Delaware and a leading voice in the movement to plant more natives, a single pair of chickadees needs 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to feed one clutch of young.

Another birdbath placed in the garden

Another birdbath placed in the garden via Instagram

I ended up buying an extra one of these a few weeks ago and then found a lovely spot for it just outside my back door. I also found a fountain I had retired earlier and added it in and connected it to the 4-outlet smart switch I added a few months ago.

This should give us a nice view of the birds from the dining room and kitchen in the future.
