Transcript:
That’s the way I often read books. I’ll be at the library and one of my favorite things to do at the library is, I got to the area called the sorting shelves. Everyone know where the sorting shelves are in their library? That’s whee books come back after they’ve been returned and they’re resorted back into their basic areas so that staff can then re-shelve them on their proper shelves. I worked in a library in college, that’s how I know these things. That was my college job. Serendipity hits you every time you look at the sorting shelves. Someone will have taken out a cookbook or a biography or a mystery novel and you just got to the sorting shelves and just kind of browse through and say “What have other people been reading lately?” And I guarantee you that you’ll find something interesting that you’ll want to take home that you never would have thought about on your own. You never would have hard about in any other way, but the serendipitous nature — that act of stumbling across something — will suddenly pique your interest. Bing! there’s your little risk for the day. How big of a risk is that? There’s no risk at all really, but compared to doing nothing, it’s an amazing risk and it exercises that (risk) muscle.
