From “Career Prescriptions” – Career Opportunities Podcast with Douglas E. Welch)
Transcript:
Third prescription. And I am going to have more. This is the last one I have written so far, but I am going to have more as we go down the road. But the 3rd prescription is, of all things, use Facebook. People will look at you, and I will say similar to Twitter, they’ll look at you an go, “Why would I want to know what someone had for lunch? Why would I want to know what someone’s cat was doing? Why would I want to get SuperPoke’d?” Which is something that people can do on Facebook. The fact is, you don’t want that. The fact is, though, Facebook has the mojo right now. Facebook is this huge collection of people with a huge number of interests in one spot. Again, just like LinkedIn, you start with the people you already know face-to-face. Family members — at least those family members that you want to talk to — friends, people in the group, people at your office, people at your other groups that you might be involved in. Start small with a small group of people and then apply what I said with those rules earlier on. Apply that rule of — is that person going to bring value or is that person going to bury me in Farmville requests?
