2012 Gift Guide: Maple Sugaring Startup Kit from Tap My Trees

Tapmytrees

Maple Sugaring Startup Kit from Tap My Trees

I understand that this might be a little specialized for most gardeners, I thought the idea was wonderful for anyone who might happen to have a stand of sugar maple on their properties. We all need a place to start and what might begin with 3 buckets this year could turn into 20 next — if we only knew how to get started. This Starter Kit from Tap My Trees gives you enough taps, hangers, buckets and covers to tap 3 trees. You won’t get a lot of maple syrup, but that you do get will feel — and taste — extra special because it came from your own trees and your own hands.

Dollar seed

DollarSeed.com – One Stop Seed Shop

DollarSeed.com owner, David Moffitt, is another regular on the weekly #gardenchat and knows quite a bit about seeds, starting, planting and harvesting. I love to highlight small, independent businesses where I find them, so I hope that you will  check out DollarSeed.com.

All packs of seed are $1 ($5 for bulk packs) and shipping is as inexpensive as possible.

More about DollarSeed.com…

If you really want to purchase the freshest garden seeds, in great resealable packaging so you can save or share the rest, we’re here for you. Not only do we keep our prices super low, but just check out our seed per pack quantities. Our seeds are not packed by machines, but by people who really care about making sure that you are getting a high Quality product. No, we don’t hand count them, that would be foolish. A pack of catchfly has approximately 1500 seeds. Do you need that many? I should hope not, but our standardized measuring system won’t allow us to give you less. Hence the ziplock style packaging, because these pretty flowers you’ll want to share.

[…]

In April of 2009, I decided to do my part to bring happiness to people. I created the Marigolds Across America campaign, and gave away over 10,000 free packages of seeds. Then it dawned on me, there are many other seeds that people would like or need. No, I do not just give them away for free anymore, just for the asking. But I do still give away an aweful lot of free seeds to help feed the needy and teach children sustainable gardening.

2012 Gift Guide: Fiskars 7936 PowerGear Pruner

Fiskars 7936 PowerGear Pruner

As I have headed back into the garden recently, I remembered how much I like my Fiskars PowerGear Pruner. These have lasted for a long time with just a little sharpening every now and then. When I do the big rose pruning job at the end of each year, these are the pruners I want in my hand.

The bottom handle rotates as you close your hand and this helps to reduce the odd hand movements and stress that traditional pruners can cause. Even more, this tool allows me to attack much larger stems and branches than I probably should. I have never come close to breaking the blades or breaking them in any other way.

I love it when I find a tool that works. Sometimes I make the common mistake of buying a cheap product instead of something in the middle of the price curve. I am always disappointed when I do that and I have to remind myself that certain products are worth their price, even if you have to pay a little more for them.

Yes, You Can! And Freeze and Dry It, Too: The Modern Step-By-Step Guide to Preserving Food

I heard about this book from the writer, who is a regular attendee of the weekly #gardenchat Twitter chat. His handle is @cityslipper. The book is chock-full of great ideas on how to preserve the bounty of your garden for those cold, dark, Winter days.

From Amazon.com…

“Preserving food is hot! The local food movement gains even more popularity as consumers return to vegetable gardening to grow their own food. They increasingly have become interested in the techniques for “putting up” their bounty. Driven by the recession; the need for healthier, chemical-free food, and taste, people everywhere are preserving the abundance of fruits, vegetables, and herbs harvested from their garden (or someone else’s). You don’t even have to grow your own to preserve freshness; non-gardeners too are learning to preserve with locally grown produce bought from local markets. Targeted at anyone who wants to capture the flavor of freshness, whether it’s from making tomato sauce, drying herbs, or preserving jams and jellies.”

2012 Gift Guide: Bon-Aire HN-10C Original Ultimate Hose Nozzle

Bon-Aire HN-10C Original Ultimate Hose Nozzle

We have a couple of these hose nozzles here in the garden and love them. Whether you are trying to gently water-in new transplants or blast grit and grime off your boots (or the side of the house) there is a setting on this nozzle. Rather than discrete settings, though, it is an infinitely variable continuum of flow from a light shower to a powerful blast. They are also very rugged and seem none the worse for wear after being outside for a year.

Video: In the garden… November 22, 2012 – Denise & Pam’s Desert Garden

“In the garden…” is a series for A Gardener’s Notebook highlighting what is happening in my garden, my friend’s gardens and California gardens throughout the seasons.

Today is our first “In the garden…” where we visit another garden in the California area. In this case, it is the garden of my sister, Denise, in Indio, California (near Palm Springs).

2012 Gift Guide: Wells Lamont Wet and Muddy Latex Coated Gardening Glove

Wells Lamont Wet and Muddy Latex Coated Gardening Glove

It is always great to have a pair of these latex-coated gloves around for those wet tasks in the garden. I use them for mixing up potting soil, harvest compost and working in the garden after a recent rain. Sure, we all like to get our hands dirty on occasion, but there are also times we don’t want to have to scrub forever just so we can go back inside.
