A small cactus flower suddenly bloomed today. My wife was wondering if her transplanting had worked and I guess this is the answer. 😀

Opuntia paddles

Many of my opuntia transplants — taken from a neighbor’s large specimen — are throwing off a number of new paddles this spring. Even those that are still in pots are showing signs of growth. I hope to eventually get fruit from these opuntia both to eat and make into a prickly pear liqueur. I regularly make limoncello and others, but I think one from opuntia fruit would be quite unique and nice.

Echinocaclus are ultimately true perennial shrubs,
only the form of which has been changed, but not the nature. These
shrubs have taken on the figure of melons. Tubers are
branches which sometimes rise from the fleshy, globular trunk. At
instead of leaves these plants bear thorns which arise from areolas.
The leaves are indicated by the bead placed below the bead.
