Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine and Piazza

Another amazing part of Italian life is the piazza — the outdoor living room of Italian towns large and small.

I sat at the cafe here, having my espresso and chocolate crossing and watching the world go by — a wonderful thing to do at any time of day.

I remember this day specifically as I walked into the cafe and ordered a ”caffe, per favore.” As I am clearly NOT and Italian and with Milano being a big tourist town, he responded ”Caffe normale?” This was my cue to use my somewhat limited and strangely accented Italian to say let him know I spoke a few words and, indeed, wanted the usual coffee that the Milanese drink. He was quite happy I spoke Italian and I explained that my wife’s family was Italian so I had to learn the language a bit.

This happened again and again in Milan and led to some great conversations in both English and Italian with shopkeepers, bar owners, and restauranteurs throughout my trip.

My Los Angeles 76 – Union Station at Christmas

Another place we visited with our Italian family. We were picking up my mother-in-law who was riding in from Fullerton. We walked across to Olvera Street and then headed over to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for the annual LA County Holiday Concert. It was a great way to spend their second day in town and Christmas Eve.

Like many others, I am always struck with the architecture of Union Station and the hustle and bustle to be found there.

Trams and bikes and people and history. This is what makes up a typical day in Milano

I only had a few opportunities to ride the trams in Milan, but their ever-present nature, convenience and the audible ambiance they bring to the town are amazing. Sometimes, we would sit in our hotel room with the windows open and just listen to city life go by. With is quite different than our life here in suburban Los Angeles.

Down the street, Milano, Italia

Just one of the many amazing views as we walked about Milan last September. Along with their grand boulevards there are many tiny streets — almost alleys really — like this which give frames views of piazzi, churches and other architecture in the city. It is at times like these where you begin to wonder what year it is until you see something modern that snaps you back to your own time.

On The Street, Via Dante, Milano, Italia

Do you do street photography? How? Why? Share in the comments!

On The Street, Via Dante, Milano, Italia

I have never been one to practice street photography much, probably because I’m too self-conscious about it and worry about bad reactions from people.

That said, one afternoon we pulled up at a kiosk to rest our feet and have a snack while we waited to meet family for dinner.

Via Dante is a large, wide, now pedestrian-only Avenue in central Milan, right near a major subway station. It is a main location for the evening passeggiata or evening stroll so familiar in Italian towns of all sizes.

This location allowed me to casually sit and capture people as they strolled by without attracting too much attention to myself, so I felt comfortable enough to try out some spontaneous street photography.

What’s interesting is that these photos bring back some of the fondest memories as they make me feel I am there again more than any photos of dusty history or buildings.

Taken from the top floor of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse while on jury duty today. I always make a point of taking photos from this rather unique perspective when I am here.

City Hall has always been a striking building and was once the tallest building in Los Angeles. I have been at the top of the tower once — where the tall pillars are — and also above that on the observation deck just above. It still offers some great views of LA if you ever get the chance.

Tiffany and Company, Beverly Hills, California

An historical name in retail, but not someplace I shop regularly.

That said, nearly 21 yeas ago, when our son was born, he received a couple of blue Tiffany boxes. These were the first that I had ever seen up close. It was quite a shock.

One gift was the proverbial “silver spoon” and I must say I never expect my son to be born with a “silver spoon in his mouth.” I always consider us to be a fairly typical midwestern family, but there have been times in our lives when we have skirted the world of money and power.

I tend to stay in for lunch in order to avoid another trip through security and at least the views are nice.

Not my favorite way to spend a day or 2, but it is a civic duty we should all do. You would want someone to do the same for you should you ever need it.

It is also important to see the “real world” of jurisprudence and not only the distorted view that television shows us.

“Walking The Night” – Columbia, Missouri via Instagram

When do you like to walk? Where? Share in the comments!

“Walking The Night”

Walking in the city at night is always such a different experience than walking it during the day. You happen upon scenes that don’t occur at any other time of day. They surprise you. In the dark you don’t see the scenes coming, they are suddenly just thrust upon you in the glow of the street lamp or the glare of car headlamps.

My inherent fear of the dark means that I don’t often go walking in wilder areas, but the pools of light found in the city offer me refuge in the surrounding darkness and I get by.

My favorite times to walk are during the full moon or on those cloud covered nights when the city lights are reflected back to earth and night almost turns into day. Then I get the best of both worlds. Shadows still conceal much but the moonlight shows off smaller scenes and highlights.

Going Metro Today! via Instagram

Do you ride public transit? Why or Why Not?  Share your thoughts in the comments!

Going Metro Today!

While I am riding the bus today out of necessity — the car is in the shop — after using public transit to get around cities like London and Milan, I know there are unique advantages.

Since you don’t have to focus on driving, you notice more along your way — even when traveling in your own neighborhood. Perhaps you spot a new restaurant you want to try or a new shop.

You also get to know your fellow citizens more. The conversations I have on the bus vary widely, but they give you a better and deeper understanding of those who share this time and place with you.

If you have visitors in town, it helps to know how the metro system works so you can give them advice. It might prevent you from having to take them everywhere by car and all the complications of traffic and parking.

Finally, and most importantly for me, I get a little more exercise than I might otherwise. Since I typically have to walk from my house to the bus stop and then from my final stop to my destination traveling by bus provides a little, forced exercise. It is never too much, but just enough to get me moving and helping to fill the activity rings on my iPhone. 😀
