Ideal for growing with shrub roses is the clump forming herbaceous perennial Geranium psilostemon (Armenian cranesbill). This plant has large, divided, green leaves that become tinted red in autumn but it is the bright pink flowers with black centres which are the attraction at the moment. The flowers fill the gap between the last of the spring bulbs and the start of the roses blooming.
