America ❤️ Lawns! (but why?) – by Annette Laing
The History of Lawns? Seriously?
Yes, indeedy. That’s not just a patch of grass in front of your house. It’s your time, your money, your stress level, your health, and so much more. And it has a history that may blow your mind. It did mine. It’s the Great American Front Lawn.Virginia Scott Jenkins’s The Lawn: A History of an American Obsession, is the best (and—shocked, I am— only) book on the history of American lawns. It is so, so much more interesting than that sounds, or it wouldn’t belong in Non-Boring History, would it, now? Look, just trust me on this one. Even though “lawn” rhymes with “yawn”.
Fire-Resistant Landscaping – California Native Plant Society
Cassy Aoyagi is the president of FormLA® Landscaping, a Los Angeles-based, LEED-certified landscape design company that has added nearly 1.5 million square feet of native plant habitat to Los Angeles. She serves on the board of the U.S. Green Building Council’s thought-leading LA Chapter (USGBC-LA). Several of Aoyagi’s projects include firewise demonstration gardens. For Flora, she agreed to show us around her own garden in the Tujunga foothills, sharing the features that protect it from wildfire, as well as a few that could still use improvement.

Native Grasses for Southern California – FineGardening
Our gardens can be a tapestry of colors, shapes, and textures, and a fresh design takes all of these elements into consideration. But when I want a plant that hits all of these marks, grasses are what I choose. They can often be the backbone of a successful garden design. Whether planted as solo specimens or grouped in a swath, grasses will catch your eye with their distinctive textural blades.
They often grow either in a bunched or rhizomatous habit, meaning they spread underground or stand alone as clumps. Either way, they can quickly offer a meadow or prairie effect when planted in masses.
