Your guide to turning a tiny L.A. balcony into an edible oasis – Los Angeles Times
Land owners have all the fun when it comes to gardening, right? All that luscious soil spreading out before them, offering limitless opportunities to grow all things delicious.
But here’s the deal people: Unless you’re feeding an army, you can grow all kinds of food for you and your family in pots on any sunny balcony or patio or porch. And it’s simpler than creating huge garden beds.
In fact, sometimes pots are preferable. In Southern California, it’s easier to grow acid-loving blueberries in the controlled soil of a half wine barrel than to try to grow them in our typically alkaline ground.

Self Watering Pots
Wet Pot is a self-watering terracotta pot that helps your plants take care of themselves! Available in three sizes, the pots work with a two-part system that allows your plants to water themselves as needed. Water supply is regulated by different co-operating factors. The technique is called Capillary Attraction. Your plant lives in the absorbent terracotta pot which in turn floats inside a perfectly sized glass cylinder. Just add water as needed to the glass exterior and watch your houseplants reach their full potential, with minimum worry on your part.

I am always on the lookout for creative planter ideas. I find them on walks around my neighbourhood, on garden tours, at botanical gardens, even at some of my local nurseries. Besides the endless array of foliage and bloom choices, the containers themselves can also play into the look—or fade into the background, letting the plants get all the attention. It all depends on the look you’re going for. Either way, I look forward to putting together my own planters each spring
