One-Touch Backup might be for you...

It is a simple fact that most of us to don't back up our systems frequently enough to prevent data loss. As our data files (and hard drives themselves) get larger and larger, the act of backing them up can seem too difficult or time consuming for all by the most geekiest computer geeks.

One way to make your life easier is to invest in a one-touch backup solution. These systems are basically a large external hard drive, with the same amount of storage (or more) as your computer system. By using the included software, you need only press one button to backup your entire computer to the external drive. Could backups be any simpler?

Maxtor OneTouch

$ 199.95 - $399.95, depending on size of hard disk

Maxtor's OneTouch is only one example of these systems, but its reviews have been fairly glowing. PC Magazine gave it a rating of 5 out of 5 in its review, No More Backup or Drive Install Woes.

If the safety of your data is keeping you up at night, this might be a solution for you.

Computer Discussion Group at the Sherman Oaks Branch of the LA Public Library

My computer "classes" at the library continue through December and into 2004. If your friends or co-workers would like an example of how I teach and coach computer users through large and small issues, I recommend they stop by some evening. This is probably the best way to get to know me and my methods.

Each class starts with a a short presentation on some interesting technology, web site or software, but then quickly becomes an energetic question and answer session, where I answer the questions that are most pressing in the minds of the attendees.

The next meeting is December 11, 2003 at 6:30 pm.

Currently scheduled for 2004:

January 8 & 22
February 12 & 26
March 11 & 25

The Sherman Oaks Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is located at 14245 Moorpark Street Sherman Oaks, CA -- Telephone 818-205-9716.

Manage and restore Palm PDA backups with these tips

Having to restore a user's Palm PDA from backup files can stem from a number of problems. For instance, a program error can leave the PDA in such a state of confusion that only a hard reset will bring it back. Or, data can be lost if the batteries on the device are allowed to go completely flat for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, a hard reset also deletes all of the device's data and programs, leaving the PDA in its factory default state. Finally, if a user's PDA is lost or destroyed, you'll need to move your user's data to a new device.

Remember to update operating systems and anti-virus programs

Anti-Virus

The beginning of each month is the perfect time to ensure that your operating system (Windows/Macintosh OS) and anti-virus software are up-to-date. Your anti-virus software cannot protect your computer from the latest viruses without these updates. Updates are released at least once a month, unless a new virus is dangerous enough to justify an immediate update.

Operating System Updates

For Windows (98, 2000, XP), there should be an icon labeled Windows Update in your Start Menu

For Macintosh OS 9 systems, check Apple Menu, Control Panels, Software Update
For Macintosh OS X systems, check System Preferences, Software Update

Most systems can be set to automatically check for updates directly from the Internet, as well. If you want to learn how to set up automatic updates for these programs, drop me an email or give me a call.

A Recent Entry:

Fast Company magazine has a very thoughtful article about the pros and cons of Wal-Mart's power in the economy of America.

The Wal-Mart You Don't Know

While the company attempts to do good on some levels, there is the constant danger of the company using its tremendous power to destroy individual manufacturers and even entire classes of manufacturers.

Is there a point where companies become too big and wield too much influence over the economy and even public policy?

Food for thought.

Locust in the Fall

Click for larger image

Dramatically clear here today with the temperature around 75 degrees.

Last weeks rain has cleared out the sky and left it this striking blue. The yellow leaves of the locust tree off the back porch are quite striking when juxtaposed with it. I am surprised the rain didn't strip this tree as it usually does. Perhaps it wasn't as heavy as in the past.

It is supposed to warm up here for the next few days and then turn cooler again with a chance for rain. The evenings have been quite cool for the Valley, getting down into the 40's at night. It makes it fun as you get some feeling of the seasons change and the upcoming holidays.
