Norton Internet Security Problems

While I heartily recommend Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus for my clients, I have been running into problems with those customers using the Norton Internet Security product. This product bundles Anti-Virus, Internet Security Firewall and Intrustion detection and several other products.

Problems included difficulties with installtion and uninstalling, complete blocking of all Internet connections and complete blocking of specific, approved sites.

I am not sure if this is simply a problem with bugs in a new product or if it runs deeper than that, but for the time being, I am recommending my clients purchase the stand-alone version of Norton Anti-Virus to avoid any complications.

If you have had problems with Norton Internet Security, post your comments here so we can see what issues exist and how they might be addressed.

I uninstalled Norton Internet Security. After that, I could not connect to the internet. Tried using the Notron program to fix the registry, but still no connection. NORTON WEBSITE IS NO HELP. I will never use Norton again.

We had Norton Internet Security pre-installed on our laptop. It is currently running in the background, cannot be uninstalled and cannot be edited as it requires an administrator password which we do not possess.

It is blocking access to ALL HTTPS websites, such as Paypal, Ebay and ANY sites that use some form of secure login. It's a pain. The only option we have so far is to completely re-write the C drive - an option we are trying to avoid!

CCaPP.exe was bringing my computer to its knees by demanding 99% of my resources, so I renamed the file and turned off Norton Security. Now Norton will not allow me to do anything to it. It claims I don't have authority to make those changes. I can't uninstall. I can't re-install. I want out! Any ideas? Like the previous comment, I can't get help from Norton without paying a fee, and I have no confidence that paying would help.

This tech note from Symantec might be the answer. They have a special utility for removing software when the Add/Remove Programs function does not work.

Removing your Norton program using SymNRT

Let me (and all the other folks here) know if this works for you.

Thanks!

SymNRT seems to be a generic "fix it" tool for these sorts of problems. Please let us know if it works for your situation.

I recently purchased NIS 05 to upgrade my 04 version. Waste of money. After installation, I could not activate the software. I was signed onto AOL, but the NIS configure wizard would not respond when I pressed the "Next" button on it. I uninstalled and reinstalled, but still the same problem. NIS tech support was no help. Three hours spent on the phone with three different NIS agents.

I will never purchase Norton again. Someone suggested that I uninstall NIS and then download MacAfee virus software through AOL, since I have AOL 9.0 Optimized. I hope that works! I'll try it tonight. Incidentally, that person said NIS ruined their computer so badly that they had to reinstall the operating system. My operating system seems to be OK -- I hope I don't have an undetected problem!

I recently installed NIS 2005 and like the others can no longer access any secure sites including my email. I cannot even access the Norton site that Norton recommended I go to when I emailed them from my work computer. They have been of no help.

Had remove and reinstall NIS 2005 - now cannot activate (click next on activation screen, windows timer for as long as you want - every thing else works including Nortons registration but as you cannot activate - not virus protection or security). Tried emailing Symantec Help (after trying EVERYTHING on their webpage), now on to the 5th response refering me to a webpage!!! All very nice, but absolutely no help.....

I've just recently installed NIS05..what a mistake! I can't access the internet at all even though the "Local Area Connection Status" says everything is fine and connected. All Norton's support is online which is absolutely no good if you can't pull up a webpage, and their telephone support costs money..how is that right!!?? I think I'm going to hopefully uninstall it and go to McAffee or someone else.

I had NIS 2004 which lost the License file. After going thru many attempts with NIS help they suggest I upgrade to NIS 2005. I've installed but cannot activate. NIS help said I had Adware that is stopping it. I cannot find any of the adware files on my computer. It's back to the help desk tomorrow for more answers

Installed it on my Win2000 box - which has gone for 4 years without a Windows reinstall, most of that with NIS 2002 (yes, I removed that first). The machine became virtually unusable. Reinstalled.

What a dog. I had a clean Windows install, and it was sweet. The first thing I put on it was NIS 2005, and immediately the machine took an extra minute to boot into windows, was far less responsive, just generally awful to work with.

The damned thing requires Internet Explorer - which any competent security organisation tells you to avoid.

And it keeps asking me to activate, keeps forgetting I've activated, and won't let me activate *again* unless I log out and log in as an Administrator.

NIS 2005 sucks.

My subscription to Norton Internet Security expires on 12/20/05. They diabled my protection of 11/21/05. Annoying Popups kept coming up telling my I was unprotected. Customer service is impossible to access. I uninstalled it and will NEVER install Norton on my PC.

I had problems uninstalling Norton.
I had to open the Norton program, click on accounts, and turn on administrator. In Windows XP, you must go to Add/Remove programs, find Norton and click remove. I kept getting error reports, but I would just click ok - this program does not want to be uninstalled, but keep at it.

Upon using new pc's having NIS 2005 preinstalled and/or after formatting such a pc, the user must not activate the preinstalled version and instead, insert the NIS 2005 CD and install from there. After I did this I have had no problems whatsoever w/NIS 2005 (aside from it occaisionally turning itself off and doesn't do much the job it's 'designed' to do. Note that when-ever one formats and installs using the cd, Norton begins the subscription as of that very date. Since we paid for it, we might as well should get our $ worth :-)

I purched NIS with a new PC activated in early 2004. No disk supplied. To continue the service after a year, several months of online directions, and emails, and finally long telephone calls, I bought a 2005 subscription with an extened subscription due to the inconvenience I had received. However my subscription expired at exactly 12 months, despite every reference and customer service operator who tells me the subscription expires on 06 May 2006. Every instruction, (and there have been many since late January) leads me to the same outcome - no fix it, update, or whatever will work because my subscription is officially 'expired'. Now I have the Trojan horse virus and NIS people won't try and assist until I have the virus removed using their online giudes - which won't help me because I am officialy 'unsubscribed'. The NIS staff use English poorly. I am not being racist - merely stating that this too adds to the time consuming, unsuccessful telephone calls. I want my money back - and I will take the issue as far as I can to make other potential customers realise the NIS system is a lot of smoke and mirrors and very little real substance.

I upgrade NIS from 2003 to 2006 and what a mistake it has turned out to be. I can no longer update my virus definitions, either automatically of manually. The Live update tells me I have a problem (which I do not have as I have followed all their online suggestions but to no avail). Manual update informs me that I do not have my subscriptions up to date which I do. I have uninstalled NIS 2006 twice and re-installed it with the same problem occuring, somehow the registry is not cleaned out after the uninstall and the installer gets confused on reinstall. I am very disappointed in the support from Symantec which is useless.

Hi Folks. I feel your pain. I came across this site because my MCAFEE internet security suite 2006 was preventing me from using Homestead, my website software. McAfee also makes you pay a fee to call them and is generally pretty useless. So both McAfee and Norton are pissing off a lot of customers.

If anyone has any alternative suggestions, let me know. dwight_o@hotmail.com

After taking about 8 hours to download the software 3 times from the web (I paid for it, in more ways than one!!!) then a few more hours to attempt to install more than 4 times (you'd think I would have learned and asked for my $ back by now right?) I rebooted my machine only to find the two other accounts on my NT OS desktop (3 logons, Administrator, one for wife and one for kids) had all of their files, pictures (from the past 3 years) and e-mails wiped from the machine. Called a local computer guru I've worked with in the past and he told me that all is lost. Anyone got any good ideas? Been told if you pay the $20.00 to talk to Norton they'll deny everything and will blame it on your system. Had operated NIS 2005 on this machine up until this problem. Looking to get rid of Norton all together an go to another company. Any suggestions in that arena?

Norton 2007 NIS Issues – The List Grows: Although Norton Symantec has a very strong presence for antivirus and firewall software, there are a number of areas where Norton has compromised options and flexibility of their product. These include: 1) inability to set “scan” from auto-schedule to manual; 2) with “live update” in manual mode won’t notify when updates are available; 3) a far too complex process of maintaining and/or setting up VPN network connections; 4) the computer operates even slower with the new Norton 2007 software than with previous versions; 5) unethical early subscription renewal practices (if you renew we they first start sending alerts, you will lose the time remaining on your existing account); 6) difficult and/or expensive access for tech support service; 7) no readily identifiable customer means for contacting Norton by email: 8) difficult or impossible to uninstall; 9) no product return policy is available. Regarding #2 above, there has never been an issue setting up VPN network connections with the XP wizard they provide, nor was it ever an issue with previous Norton Version’s I have had. I'm sure the software design folks, who are quite smart, know about these issues and their unethical renewal practice. The tech service rep in India I was IMing with did however, did offer apologizes.

I installed norton internet security 2006 and found that it likes my computers resources too much so I decided to get rid of it.
I tried the uninstall and that failed, I tryed the tool provided to remove it from the symantec site, no luck there either.
So I decided to do it manually and here is how I did it.
first I rebooted in to safe mode, press F8 on startup and use the cursor keys to highlight safe mode and press enter
then when I was in safe mode I double clicked on my computer, then double clicked on drive C, then on program files.
I right clicked on norton internet security folder and chose delete, did the same for 2 other folders starting with symantec, then I double clicked on common files (this is a hidden folder, click on tools, folder options, clicked the view tab and clicked show all files, then clicked ok)
then I deleted the file in common files called symantec shared.
then I restarted my computer and no more norton and all is fine :)
Ok, now for the good free security, get avg from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
it is an ok anti-virus.
get zonealarm free from http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
good free firewall
grab easycleaner from http://www.majorgeeks.com/EasyCleaner_d414.html to fix any registry issues from the manual uninstall
If you need something to get rid of spyware try spybot search and destroy 1.3 from http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=spybot and adaware from http://www.download.com/3000-20-10045910.html
Enjoy :)

After my computer tended to get slower and slower, I uninstalled NIS 2004. First thing i stumbled upon was that my windows firewall was unaccessible. Norton Anti-Worm weas informing me that. (hadn't I uninstalled that recently???) Due to 'an unknown error' my firewall settings could not be edited. I managed to fix that, happily.

More of a problem is the lost smtp-connections. I am not able to connect to my outgoing mail servers anymore since I uninstalled NIS. I keep getting the 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' I checkec with my ISP, there's nothing wrong over there.

Well, my main message is: NEVER USE NORTON!
heres why:
Norton has now infected 3 of my computers. The first instance was when i got a dell desktop pc. It came with norton on it and after about 6 months it started coming up with loads of email scanning dialogues. these were rapidly filling up my screen and i also had alerts saying stuff like your email to rob21@geocities.com could not be sent. I have never heard of this email address before and so this is very strange.
The next instance was on my brand new hp laptop. It came with a free trial of norton but after about 3 days the same thing happened to my laptop as it did with my desktop!
The final instance was on my sisters brand new hp laptop. This was quite different. the problem was that it took a very long time to boot up and when it did it said there was an error and it asked if she wanted to debug. if she said no then windows would run normally but the alert would keep appearing every so often. if she clicked yes it would run in debug mode but she did not want to have it in debug mode. her boyfriend investigated, uninstalled norton, and it was fine!
Thanks for reading

My problems started when I installed CyberSitter Software. I kept getting a message that I needed to update...which I did 10 times and the message kept popping up. Then my email messages started timing out. So, I reinstalled the Norton and now I cannot get on the internet at all and Norton is "Not Responding" to check that the settings are compatible with CyberSitter. Argh. I've tried McAfee in the past and hated it...is there any way to make Norton work okay? I used to use just "Norton antivirus" without firewall etc. and it worked fine (2002 version) for years. Perhaps I should just purchase the plain antiviral software instead of the fancy full package. Think that will work?

Thanks

I purchased Norton Internet Security 2007 and installed it in my Dell Laptop. After that I was unable to connect to internet using 24Online broadband client. When I start the Computer using safe mode (I have WinXPHomeSP2), the NIS2007 isn't running and the 24Online Broadband client works just fine. But in normal mode, the client won't run in the presence of NIS2007 (checked with all protection ON and OFF, it's all the same). The Symantec Support ppl were really helpful, except the fact that they were unable to solve the issue, and my ISP ppl say no probs, u just uninstall NIS2007 and then connect to the Net... wondering what to do with this crap ....wasted $$$... :(

Since installing NIS 2007 on my PC, I have been unable to use my network laser printer. I share the printer using a Linksys Printer Server. Other houshold PCs and wireless Laptops (non NIS) have no problems.

Finally turned off the NIS firewall feature and I got back my printing ability.

Norton (2006) now blocks all attempts to connect to internet - even to their own website and live up date. This has happened since a recent update.

If you switch it off for a few minutes it lets everything connect - but at what security cost?

Help not forthcoming despite promises, so no more Norton (on several computers)

As a tech and support pro; I will leave this message as I know that google finds it and it will help others.

I totally uninstall all Norton and Symantec items from any PC I have rights to manange. I also dig into the shipment boxes, gather as many of the CDs and or DVDs that are sent for use as wind-chime dongles and 223 targets. Those are also added to the collection of AOL disc.

Great product back in the da of DOS and Norton Commander.

Now the bog down and break more than they are worth to the people willing to feel like they have to buy the best.

The best seems to be AVG Free.
And a manual course of SpyBot S&D.
Don't try to google either unless you know what your loading as spyware is all over trying to stop that.

However, once both are loaded, this is more than most end users will need to correct nearly all issues they have with these new systems.

The brightest thing might be to ensure you actually got shipped that new Vista Recovery method and try it out like 9 mins into the "Wow" of your new system.. at least by the time it doesn't work, you still have time to take it all back and complain before the sun goes down.

Just my thoughts..

I kept having problems with NIS 2006 blocking all of my internet games like Everquest every time they where updated even though I would say allow access to all ports etc. After about the 20th time I tried to uninstall the resource hog program but it would not work as it kept crashing. Finally I manually deleted the whole folder using a program that would delete the "protected" files on reboot. Then I used the Norton Removal Tool to clean up everything left after that. I will never buy another Symantec product for the rest of my life. NIS is worse than the viruses it is supposed to protect you from. Symantec customer support is worthless.

A few days ago, my problem started with Norton Internet Security 2007 which I've been using on my Windows XP for like 6 months now. Auto-protection does not work, and the software tends to block all my emails from getting downloaded from the server. It started post to an update session. Their AutoFix file which I downloaded did not work at all - I wasted time & money downloading it! Sorry but I'm not going to renew my registration with Symantic Norton, I'd go McAfee, TrendMicro or anything but Norton.

I've been using Norton Internet Security 2008 for less than a month. I've had the same problem twice. The only error I see is Symantec Framework Stopped Working. The first time I tried to contact Symantec Support I received no response. I uninstalled the product then reinstalled it and it worked fine till today. Then I started getting the Symantec Framework Stopped Working error again whenever I checked email. I contacted Symantec Support (again no response). I uninstalled the product again and Installed ZoneAlarm Internet Security. That not only bogged down my system but completly blocked my internet connection. I uninstalled that and Installed Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.

I've been using Norton Internet Security for a couple of years and it has been nothing but trouble. I currently have the 2007 product and it constantly tells me there are protection updates that need to be downloaded. This is despite the fact I scan for updates everyday and it usually tells me i have all available downloads. Norton, never again.

I've had it with Norton, used them since way back in the day. Recently reinstalled my OS, and subscription was up for AV, so I figured I'd upgrade to 2008. It's now off of my system caused too many problems and hello, why should I go through leaps and bounds to have to fix their issues with crappy software. Will never again use their crap, to add insult to injury their support system wasn't working either. Used to have the NIS suite too turned that thing off slowed system down to a crawl. AV has been fine but urgh recent experiences just make me shudder.

HORRIBLE!!! Company all around sucks- BEWARE!!! Service is bad, can't get anyone on the line, and messed up whole pc. Many stores told me to get rid of Norton that they recently have become problems for many people. Slows computer, shuts them down, uses crazy amount of memory, and charges an arm and leg! I only purchased b/c of reputation, but now that I look up online and see others with same exact problems and see how terrible their customer support is- I have bought another and have no problems with it on laptop. DON'T buy Norton if you haven't yet! Their customer service number tells you to speak your answers and they don't acknowledge voices and other options are just as bad. Can';t get anyone on the phone.

Few days ago my parents installed NIS 2008 onto their emachine computer. Apparently from what I can tell is that Norton deleted one of the WAN Miniport drivers that is used to connect to the internet. The computer showed the cable was connected but there was no activity. I spent hours searching the internet for the driver and I even tried a system recovery but nothing worked. I ended up formatting and reinstalling Windows after I backed everything up. I don't recommend Norton to anyone as with past experiences all it could do is tell me I had a virus and not be able to get rid of it. Though I do recommend for people to buy a external hard driver of at least 160GB of storage, these can really come in handy when need of formatting your computer's hard drive.

I've had intermittent problems with connecting but I thought it was due to a weak signal being across the house. After removing the 60-day trial and installing a university version of Norton I thought I was okay. Lately, I could connect to public locations (i.e. library) but couldn't at home to my netgear router. After I removed all Norton products, I've been able to connect again. Wow, frustrating. The removal tool saved my sanity.

Norton Antivirus is so poorly written, it slows the system, difficult sometimes to uninstall and sometimes detects virus and can’t remove it. It looks like the bigger the company gets the worst their products become. The first thing I do when ever Am working on any computer is to uninstall Norton if is present and the performance improves. Try Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic (Is free) and you will never touch Norton again.

I had no choice but to cancel the uninstallation and restart my laptop and then when i restarted it completely fcked up and disabled my internet, i couldnt access any sites and any effort to configure my network to get it to work again failed.
I had to reformat my laptop and take it back to factory settings in order to get internet access back.

Norton also caused alot of problems on my old pc and again refused to uninstall, i definately wouldnt advise anyone to buy this, its a complete nightmare.

I have Norton security on my Windows Vista laptop and my girlfriend had it on her Desktop, both of our computers are HP.
but we both came into problems using Norton, it freezes MSN up alot which pissed us off, her brother installed Trendo Mico on her desktop, but since we live far away from each other I couldn't get the disk from him. I have a desktop here that my parents use, its a Dell Dimension E520, same version of windows vista thats on my laptop and it has McAfee Security center 2006 and it works perfect, but I'm starting to look around for another Anti-Virus for my laptop, any suggestions?

I was on line last night . . .all of a sudden the Norton App reports I have shut down the Firewall and AV - and yet I did neither . . . and I can't reactivate . . . which means someone was able to PENETRATE and disable the Symantec software SOFTWARE. I am thinking for a SECURITY Company, this would qualiofy as a BAD thing . . and I have been waiting FOREVER for a chat with Norton Security Support. Oh good look - I am 13th in queue now . . . I am betting others have had the SAME problem.

The disabling of my Norton software by outside attack was espcially ironic, when you look at the box:
Marketing Claims:
Blocks Identity Theft on line
Detects and eliminates spyware
Removes VIrsuses
Protectsd against Hackers

Well at least the MARKETING department has it right - now if only software engineering could DELIVER!!!

What a load of crap! I down loaded from the internet and the computer froze soid! NOTHING worked - couldn't get on line - couldn't even play cards! Took it to a computer guy who uninstalled the "program" and said it is NOT a good one and slows the computer down so much! Now - getting them to credit my credit card will be a hassle - as who knows their address for email? Ever notice that is missing? REFUSE TO PAY to talk to someone. NEVER AGAIN! Will just contest the charge.

I have Norton 2009, got a virus had it fixed by the virus consultant after a $99.99 charge. Computer crashed within 24 hrs. Had another technician say I needed a tune up $69.99. Worked a day and half and computer is crashing again. The technician this time rebooted it and it worked 2 hrs. Then another technician rebooted it and told me I needed more memory even though my computer says I have lots of memory except when Norton is running any program it takes 100% memory. I am ready to scream. Anyone else had problems with this 2009 version? I have windows XP.

I put NIS 2009 on my XP machine and all seems well, but on my wifes Dell laptop with Vista Home, it can't find the server to do updates. Spent over 8 hours on line with 5 difference techs and got nowhere.

Norton has caused my computer to be extremely slow and "jerky." My son installed the security system also and couldn't access the Internet until it was reinstalled. A friend also installed the same system, and her computer was so painfully slow that she uninstalled it. I paid close to $100 for the latest (2009) Norton bundle and (hopefully) will receive a $45 rebate, which will go towards another security system. What a waste of money!

Uninstalling Norton caused my web browsers to stop loading. Whether this may be malware that is finally able to get at me i do not know but I do know that I have an internet connection but my browsers won't load.

Has Norton blocked all my ports or what?

Simply put...Norton suddenly had some sort of conflict which has blocked my internet access.

Simply put...i system restored my Pc to its state a day before i encountered the issue.

Simply put i'm using IE-7, i cleared out some cluttering files, disabled norton while browsing allowing my built in security work and everything is fine. I just have to disable norton while browsing.

Purchased an HP 64-bit laptop from Best Buy. I upgraded from Vista to Win7. Later the audio went out.
So I took it back to Best Buy and they said I had a lot of viruses and charged me $130 to fix.
I told them that I had Norton 2009 installed which is what HP recommended.
The tech said the Norton has problems with not catching all the viruses.
So who is to blame? Best Buy, HP, or Norton?

I downloaded Norton days ago because that's what Comcast uses (yeah, I know I shouldn't rely on them). Anyway, I have XP and now I no longer have to give a password to open my user account. comcast cs says I need to set my log-in up again. WTH does Norton screw with that?
