APPLE TREES AS DWARF BUSHES.

A VERY large proportion of the readers of The Journal of Horticulture are also the owners of small gardens, and to such a few practical details of the culture of the Apple tree as a dwarf hush may be useful. The instructions may seem tedious to those who know ” all about it,” but to those but little acquainted with the culture of fruit trees this does not seem so clear. A friend of my own, a retired tradesman, who does all the light work in his garden, has under my direction taken to the summer management of his Vines and fruit trees. On one occasion after I had clearly explained the pinch- ing and training of the Vines, and shown him how easy it was, he said, “Yes, it seems easy to you, but to me it is very ditficult.” So in our writings, if we wrote only for trained gardeners we might take a good deal for granted ; but in writing for the uninitiated even minute details are important.

An Example of Woodlot Forestry.

During the winter of 1911-12 an improvement thinning was m’ade in the forest on the State Reserve at Mount Laurel near Moorestown, Burlington county. This forest came into the possession of the State in the usual neglected condition; that is, it had been simply allowed to grow. Fortunately, fire had been kept out. The presence of considerable blight-killed chestnut on a part of the area, and a general crowding of the trees, made necessary a felling much heavier than would be proper except under extraordinary conditions. Forty-five per cent, of the cubic contents of the stand was removed, and some large vacan- cies resulted because of irregularities of growth, but the greater part of the area was so treated that a fairly even stand of trees was left (see Figs. 3, 11, 13). Fifteen dollars per acre was netted on the operation. More could have been realized by a private owner who would adapt time and convenience to the work.

As the forest on this reserve is typical of that on many areas in New Jersey, it is the purpose of this bulletin to describe its treatment as a practical example of how similar forests should be managed. The questions whioh entered into the treatment of this forest, and which will have to be considered in most woodlot forestry, with the faults that were revealed, are discussed under the following headings

We commence our eighth annual volume with the feeling of a novice new to his work. We direct the same pen, and the same page convej^s our teachings to those who read ; but the readers are not all of the olden time : and to all these new friends we feel as if we were starting on a fresh trial for their approval of our efforts to entertain and instruct them. Yet much that we say in these chapters cannot be new. The soil and conditions that grew the best Cabbage last year, will very likely produce the largest and sweetest heads in this ; and the Roses and the Violets which we tanglit how best to exhibit their beauty or deliver up their sweetness last year, may perhaps have this year not much to improve in these particulars. But this must not deter us from our task, — as the child wlao plays with its buttercups and dandelions, we must weave our materials over and over again. It may be the same buds and blossoms, and the fairy chain may be of the same length ; but in the rearrangement of the material we hope to improve with each new experiment, so that we may reject what has become bruised by bad usage, and turn more towai’ds the light such as before were badly seen.

FOREWORD The California Garden makes its bow to the good folks of San Diego, with this, its first issue. It desires to be confidential, and frankly state how it comes to be published, and what it hopes to accomplish. In the first place, it is the official organ of the San Diego Floral Association, the objects of which are all to wards a more beautiful city, a city of gardens — taking advantage of its wonderful climatic conditions and realising some part of its possibilities floriculturally. In addition to faithfully recording the doings of the association, it proposes to give practical and timely information with regard to the flower garden and the vege table patch. It will tell each month how to take care of that which is already growing, and what to plant beside. And the information will be furnished by local authorities from their own experience. Indigenous plants of merit will be dealt with in special illustrated articles, and the latest introductions in the floral world, worthy of a trial in this locality, will be brought to the attention of its read ers. Though the publications devoted to gardening in the United States are most numerous and meritorious, they utterly fail as guides in San Diego. No rain in summer, no snow or frost in winter, a green and growing land at Christ mastide, entirely upset their calculations. Florally San Diego is a law unto itself, and this magazine hopes to emphasize the workings of that law. The California Garden has already secured the support of most of the local authorities upon sub jects within its province. It has in preparation articles of great interest relating to local plants, shrubs and flowers, and it intends to open a query box for the many newcomers, and almost as numerous old residents, who just want to know.

PREFACE

The author has tried to make this little volume so full of useful hints and practical instruction for young people, teachers, and parents, that it will lead to the making of many good home gardens in both city and country.

The school garden movement should have for its main object the starting of home gardens by both young and old. All other objects of school gardening, as herein enumerated, should be given a trend towards this one great aim. In this volume many simple home and school exercises are briefly outlined, for the purpose of developing the under- lying principles. It will be found that the trial of these exercises will develop much thought in the young mind, and a greater interest will be maintained.

Suggestions to teachers and club leaders are given in Part III. The first two chapters of the book should also be read by leaders in the garden work. Beginners will find the garden calendars and • planting tables very lielpful. The illustrations have been chosen chiefly for instruction and suggestion rather than for mere interest.
