There is a simple truth about your career that we often ignore. You can be the best at anything -- the best programmer, the best writer, the best chef, the best accountant -- but if no one knows about what you do, and how well you do it, what does it really matter. Without visibility in your career you can struggle every day, working harder and harder and yet find yourself going nowhere.

Heather has a great observation here. I hope she will forgive me for posting it in full, but I think it holds a lesson for all of us. Be a FireStarter in your live and in your work. Be the one that gets things started. First, if you start something, everyone who comes later will know who you are. Second, you can make an entire life and career out of spurring others to great acts. Think of Johnny Appleseed, who is remembered even today for the simple act of planting apples.

Heather may have hit upon an excellent theme for 2008. What fires can you get started?

A Story on Firestarting
I occasionally attended a yearly multi-day gathering with friends at an old homesteader cabin in the Mojave. The area is desolate, and for one weekend we bring in generators and DJ equipment, a stage and about 80 people camp, party and generally have a good time. We shoot guns at the private range and generally engage in standard desert activities: eating, drinking, esoteric conversations and taking in the natural beauty of the desert. At night it is cold, so we have fires - inevitably started by yours truly.

In this particular weekend, it was unseasonably cold and as the sun set, everyone was gathered in and around the cabin. It was crammed in there while no one was paying attention to the cold desert beauty at dusk. So I went outside to start a fire. At first, it was just me and Sam, and a friend or two stopping by. We chucked more wood into it and really got it going. Then others came out and started adding wood and pretty soon there were a lot of people by the fire. The fire was going really well and people were enjoying adding wood and taking care of it. Since there were 2 other fire pit possibilities and plenty of wood, I moved onto start another fire in another location.

Same story as the first one. At first it was me and Sam (my firestarting partner) stacking the wood, the newspaper, twigs and lighting the match in several locations. We always get the fire started on the first try. Again, we were alone with the fire, but slowly folks moved from the first fire and others from the cabin came out to be around the second fire. It was closer to the stage and dance area so people would stop by to warm up between dancing and wandering.

The same thing happened for the third fire. At that point I would occasionally need to add fire to the previous other fires.

I feel like that's what happened here in LA Tech. There are tons of people around adding fuel to the fire, chucking on their own pieces of wood. Making a fire bigger and even starting their own. The fires are beautiful and roiling. It's very hot and going quite nicely.

As I write, Spaceship One has won the X Prize, traveling to non-orbital space twice within two weeks. As I watched the news coverage, my thoughts went beyond the immediate accomplishment and onto the lesson that we can all take away from this successful mission. A clearly defined goal could be the most important part of any high-tech career. Without it, we can become timid, only proceeding slowly and incrementally instead of striving to do our very best. If you don’t have some compelling goals in your life and your career, you should sit down, today, and do some concentrated thinking.

It is the holiday season once again and our thoughts are turned to goodwill and presents for the special people in our lives. Too often, though, we neglect ourselves at this time of year. Now, I am not suggesting you go out and by that new Macbook Pro you've always wanted and get your wife a bowling ball. Rather, there is a very special gift you can give yourself that costs absolutely nothing. The greatest gift you can give yourself at this time of year is the gift of self-knowledge. Taking time to reflect now, at this usually happy time of year can bring great benefits in the year to come.

Over the past several weeks I have been writing a lot about thinking...thinking about your purpose, your future and your goals. While thinking is certainly important, all of your good ideas might just go to waste if you don't combine that thinking with a little bit of doing. Your thinking has probably generated a host of to-do items and ideas for larger projects. Now is the time put some of those ideas into motion.

Get something done

While I normally try to include some implementation time into every workday, sometimes I need to schedule a "Doing Day." This is a day totally dedicated to implementation. Perhaps you need to add or update pages on your web site or create a proposal for a new product. It can be something as simple as getting your new printer installed or something as complicated as launching a new ad campaign. If you are like me, you probably have many items, tasks, to-dos that need to be addressed. Collect all of your notes (You have been keeping notes, haven't you?) and put together a list of all the things, big and little, that you need to move forward or, even better, complete.

Instead of my typical holiday guide, this year I present a selection of items that I would love to receive for Christmas. Although I am a big technology hound, I don't often buy it for myself, so many of these items are sure to remain "wishes" for another year. -- Douglas

That doesn't mean the you might not find these items a great gift for yourself or someone you love.

#10 HDTV and Accessories

I love the look of HDTV and would love to have one of my own. Of course, I would love to see some reduction in the costs of these units. I also see the ability to plug my computer into the screen as a big plus over older televisions.

As I continue to make more and more video content I am eating up hard disk space at an alarming rate. In this case, I couldn't wait any longer and bought this for myself today, but it, or something like it has been on my wish list for a long time. Expect more videos now that I have the space to edit them.

#08 Sennheiser HD 25 Dynamic Compact Professional Monitoring Headphone

I spend a lot of time wearing headphones, with all this podcasting work I am doing lately, so having a nice set of headphones would certainly be an improvement. Not only must headphones sounds good, they have to be comfortable, too, and Sennheiser tends to make headphones which are both.

#7 Moleskine Large Ruled Notebook

There are certain gifts that will make people happy regardless. For my wife, it is coffee, chocolate and books. For myself, coffee, wine and a nice Moleskine Journal like this. I always carry a book around with me wherever I go and the Moleskine books hold up better than anything else I have owned. They keep their covers, they have that nice elastic band to hold them shut and the paper quality is top-notch. Get one for yourself...and pick one up for me! (SMILE)

Anyone, no matter what their age, can find themselves in the depths of a rut. It can start out slowly. Going to the same restaurants, using the same software, listening to the same music. The next thing you know, there you are, in a rut. As I’m finding, getting older can make it even easier to get into a rut. There are days when I simply don’t want to face the trials and tribulations of daily life. I just want to do something familiar. Of course, a few days later, I wake up feeling bored…and boring…and not really knowing why. Even though I know the importance of finding new challenges, new passions and new input, I have to actively reach out and engage the world in order to find them.

With our current obsession on time and productivity, you would think that punctuality would be de rigueur for any effective worker. We have our cell phones, our iPhones, our Blackberries, constantly reminding us of what we should be doing and when. Even today, though, there is a certain portion of the populace who simply can't be on time to any event, whether a weekly staff meeting, school drop-off or dinner party. Why is this? What fundamental factor prevents them from engaging the world in this important way?
