Opportunity -- from the Career Opportunities Podcast

Opportunity

When attracting opportunity to you, one of the most important aspects is to tell people “what you do and how well you do it.”

This is the main reason I encourage people to start blogging, to start using Social Media, Podcasting and more, because they are perfect avenues to tell people “what you do and how well you do it” – and way to actively demonstrate it.

Are you evil? from the Career Opportunities Podcast

Are you evil?

Of course, if your company is evil, then you are also evil…or, at least, on your way to evilness. Every time you reinforce an abusive policy, overcharge a customer, engage in “bait and switch” tactics or whatever other evil behaviors your company exhibits, you, personally are becoming more and more evil. The evil starts to wrap you up in its web.

Attracting Opportunity to You… from the Career Opportunities Podcast

Attracting Opportunity to You

The most powerful actions you can take in your life and career are those that attract opportunity to you. While we can all go seeking opportunity, helping opportunities to find you is a much more productive and, in some ways, is much less tiring than other methods. Even more, attracting attention to you is something you can do every day and in every way. You can build it into your day-to-day actions and make it part of your life instead of something outside the norm.

Empathy…

August 26th, 2014 Comments off

Empathy...

“Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings or situation of another person. As you might imagine, empathy is a very important trait for those people who want to successfully collaborate with others, whether as co-workers, manager and staff or client and consultant. If you are unable to connect with others or truly understand what they might be feeling, you set yourself apart like a modern day Marie Antoinette, giving advice without any real understanding of the world around you. Other people are quick to catch on when you lack empathy or any real understanding of how they are feeling. This diminishes your effectiveness with others and can put your career at risk.”

How to deal with “End of an Era” events…

August 18th, 2014 Comments off

Endofanera quote

“How do you approach the “End of an Era” events in your life?

Do you cry, stomp your feet, complain?

That is fine, up to a point. After you get over the initial shock, though, it is important to figure out your next step. Your life has brought you to this point over the years. What is the next step? What would you most like to do now? The truth is, without these endings forced upon us, we would often continue on in the same way, the same rut, for years longer than could ever be productive. It seems a cliché, but I find it more and more true each time it occurs. Endings are just as important as beginnings. If we fail to end things ourselves, we should, at least, appreciate those endings that are forced upon us. Otherwise, we might never grow.”

There are those that don’t listen, some who can’t listen and others who, simply won’t listen. — from the Career Opportunities Podcast

There are those that don’t listen, some who can’t listen and others who, simply won’t listen. -- from the Career Opportunities Podcast

“One frustrating aspect of a consulting career is clients who ask for your advice and guidance, but, for whatever reason, never seem to heed it. In these cases, I have found 3 distinct classifications. There are those that don’t listen, some who can’t listen and others who, simply won’t listen. While dealing with each of these 3 types has its unique challenges, it is the last one that seems to cause all the problems. If you run into clients who won’t listen, your career could be in for some very difficult times.”

Don't deny your own uniqueness… from Career Compass: Finding Your Career North

“Our businesses want replaceable cogs that they can insert into their industrial machines. Schools want students that sit down and stay silent. It rewards those that “fit in” and often punishes those that don’t. In such jobs, that  drive towards “normal” can lead us to make some very bad decisions about our own careers. In order to fit in we might be denying our unique skills and the knowledge that could lead us to exceptional careers — not just an average one.”

Privacy and the need to sell yourself in your career…

Today, you need to be spending every moment telling people “what you do and how well you do it.” If you insist on keeping every aspect of your life private, you are severely limiting the number of people that know about you and the opportunities these people may be able to provide. When it comes to your career, you can’t “hide your light under a bushel” and expect to achieve the career results you want.
