Douglas E. Welch (http://douglasewelch.com) presents to the class Career Development – Theories and Techniques at Pepperdine Graduate School of Education & Psychology taught by fellow CareerCamp Co-Chair, Danielle Gruen

But that was about the last — our parent’s generation was about the last generation where the whole “gold watch and a handshake” at the end of your 30 years at a company retirement was even a possibility. Ever since then that’s become more and more of a joke that that’s just not the way life works, but many of us — many of the people you will deal with — still have that in their head. Especially people who — my age — who are transitioning between jobs. I just spoke to and OPEN group out in Simi Valley — I speak out there, it’s like this is my yearly thing — I speak here and I speak there in March every year. And, in those people, still in the back of their mind they can keep that idea of how a career is supposed to work in a world that no longer understands that idea of a career. And that’s very dangerous for someone, anyone, to have a conceit like that stuck in their head because it’s not going to allow them to make the best decisions about their career and about their lives even.
