Video: Be An Internet Skeptic!

Douglas presents “Be An Internet Skeptic!” (49 mins) to the Docents of the LA Zoo on Friday, September 14, 2012. This video contains both video and slides.

Sorting valid information from Internet hoaxes can be a daunting task, but a few simple steps can help to disqualify and debunk most hoaxes very easily. Learn a couple of simple tools for online debunking and learn why people sometimes “lie” on the Internet. Once you know how people benefit from suspect information, it becomes easier to spot hoaxes from the start.

Can’t se the video above? Watch “Be An Internet Skeptic!” on YouTube.

Food: Polenta-Pistachio Cake

This looks to be such a leap above the typical box cake. I will be making this as soon as I can. I love cornmeal and I love pistachio and I love the idea of combining them into — what I consider — a fairly rustic cake. I could see the Sicilian relatives making a cake like this. Simple, unadorned, but wonderful.

Food: Homemade Pizzelle and Chocolate Hazelnut Ice Cream Sandwich

Even though we regularly make pizzelle — these crunchy, thin, waffle-like Italian cookies — I had never really thought about turning them into ice cream. I could even make my own ice cream for these, choosing whatever flavor I would like most.

Pizzelle do require a dedicated iron to make, but since my wife is of Sicilian descent, a pizzelle iron was one of the first appliances we purchased in our marriage. (LAUGH)
