Science Sunday: Photos from Annular Solar Eclipse taken in Van Nuys todays

At the end of a Neighborhood Watch Meeting today I announced that I had eclipse viewers to share so people could take a gander at today’s annular solar eclipse. That, along with a large party at the neighbors and the fact that I was standing in my front yard pointing a camera and my own eyes at the sun, led to us having about 20 people stop by to take a look.

I think science is very, very cool and it was great to help people enjoy something so scientifically special in their own front yards. This is especially true for the kids. I loved that the first words out of their mouths — and most of the adults too — was COOL! Hopefully this will stick with them when they are older and wondering what science really has to offer them in life.

Here are few of the photos I tried to capture. It is very difficult to shoot an eclipse, even with the special filters provided by my eclipse-watching expert friend, Michael. I really don’t have a big enough telephoto lens to create a very large image of the eclipse, but what I caught I think came out very well.

Festival Rides – Long exposure pictures

We visited the St. Francis de Sales festival Friday evening and I had a chance to try out my good camera on some long exposure shots of the moving rides. I had been wanting to do this for a while and I think the results were pretty cool. I learned a few things about my camera and have some new ideas for a future shoot.

Amazing bookshelf in office dome

I came across this post from inthralld and this amazing home office library that uses a dome to house the bookshelves.

I am sure some of use dream of a home library and office, but seeing something like this takes the dream to an entirely different level. Wow!

Sure, it is a bit inconvenient to have to use a ladder to reach your books, but what a show on a daily basis.

Tip: Freezing pancakes

Whenever we make pancakes, we always have leftovers. We usually freeze these up so they can be popped in the toaster on those mornings when we need a quick breakfast before we run out the door.

The trick with freezing pancakes is to freeze them individually on a half sheet pan before bagging them up for storage. My, rather small, freezer will just fit these pans, so I would guess that would be true of all but the smallest fridges.

If they are touching one another as they freeze, they will weld into one lump that you will never break apart. This isn’t very good for grabbing one or two to heat up in the toaster.

Once they are frozen, you can stack them up and store them in a zip-top bags without worry or putting waxed paper between each one. Then you can easily pull out however many you want whenever you want. Simple, but it really makes life a little bit easier.

* This same trick can be used for fruit, cookies or anything you want to be able to pull out of the freezer individually
