Love letters can bridge time and place.

And they come in many different forms.

Sometimes a love letter offers the love of a friend

and reaches across desolation

to bring the recipient back to the world of the hopeful.

Sometimes the loss a letter conveys is unexpected.

A few words can bring the reality of home

across an ocean

to a distant battlefield.

The love can be written between the lines.

Some love letters are the trumpets that herald

the return of their author.

These letters leap across time and miles

to escort in the future.

Do something different this Valentine’s Day,

reach across the distance

speaking your words.

Our friend, Janet Wilcox, will be starting her UCLA Extension voiceover class again in just a week. If you are interested in getting started in the industry, this could be the class for you. I will be speaking to her class about New Media this session, as I have done in the past.

Class Description:

Pursuing a Career in Voice Overs

Do people say you have a wonderful voice? Gain a comprehensive understanding of the tools needed to excel in TV and radio commercials, animation, narration for documentaries, and other areas of voice over work. Instruction includes breath and microphone technique, script analysis, finding characters spontaneously, and how to keep it fun, even when the pressure’s on. Participants also learn how to pursue a career in voice over.

Janet Wilcox’s Bio

Writer, producer, and actor with extensive experience on both sides of the microphone. Ms. Wilcox has written and produced promos for HBO, ABC, and The History Channel, among others. As a voice over talent, she has been heard on Lifetime, HBO, E!, Cinemax, and AMC. She is the author of Voiceovers: Techniques and Tactics for Success.

Our 6th Annual LIVE Reading of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol will take place on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 6pm EST/3pm PST.

Our annual holiday reading of this classic Dickens’ story. We bring together frends and family to read sections from a condensed version of the story — said to be made by Charles Dickens himself — for his own live, public readings. Follow Scrooge, Bob Crachit, Tiny Tim and all the familiar characters as they both teach and learn what Christmas is all about.

Tune in while you prepare your Christmas cookies or wrap your Christmas presents. Join the “spirits” of the season!

What’s the value of song structures? Are they really rules? Are they the same in every style? Can you break the rules if you’re an artist? Can you stretch them in live performance? Though an understanding of song structures can make or break the commercial potential of a song, if you learned there were only 3 or 4 structures that are acceptable, you may have more creative latitude than you think!

Whenever we mention to people that we like to go out and shoot archery and throw axes, knives and spears, we get a lot of “That’s cool! How can I do that?” Well, here is your bi-monthly chance to join us at the Barony of Altavia’s twice monthly practice sessions at the Woodley Park Archery range. Everyone is welcome. We don’t “dress up” for practice (At larger official SCA events we dress in “garb” or period attire) If you want to throw axes and knives you must be wearing closed toe shows.

We have some loaner archery gear for you to use, too.

Event: Island Fox at Santa Barbara Zoo Science Day

Oct. 1, 2011 the Santa Barbara Zoo will be hosting a Science Day event. Friends of the Island Fox will be one of many community presenters with family-friendly science-based activities. The goal is to offer teachers a variety of science activities that can be replicated in the classroom.
