From Amazon.com…

Who was the original world-changing techno-entrepreneurial innovator? Not Google’s Larry and Sergey. Not Steve Jobs. No, to find the man who made the mold, you’ve got to go back to fifteenth-century Germany to find Johannes Gutenberg. Jarvis portrays the famed inventor as creator of more than just the printing press and the market for Bibles. “Gutenberg,” he argues, “should… be seen as the patron saint of Silicon Valley, for he used technology to create an industry.” Setting Gutenberg’s successes against the real pitfalls he endured, notably his early struggle to amass sufficient capital, Jarvis portrays a bad-boy innovator with a deft, if sometimes heavy hand. He bravely wears his assumptions– for example, the neutrality of technology– on his sleeve, and his lesson for techno-dreamers is straightforward. Read your history, Jarvis insists. “Your goal, geeks, is to be more like Gutenberg.” –Jason Kirk

Life comes and goes quickly. One day you are young, vibrant, and “taking charge” and then all of the sudden your are waking up, going through the motions and putting your time in. As your life passes you by, your experiences are some of the most important things you have to show for it.

Rather than let your life pass as a stream of experiences that you won’t remember later or never stop to process their meaning, keep a journal to become a better person.

I just happened to see that you can now read Amazon Kindle books right in your web browser — no software download or install needed. This makes it even more convenient for people to buy and read my eBooks. You can still download the Amazon Kindle Reader software for your computer, iPhone/iPad or Android smartphone or tablet, but if you just want a quick diversion — perhaps you are using someone else’s computer (or a public access terminal at your local library) — you can easily access the books you won directly from the cloud.

It looks to be quite a dramatic read. I heard some of these stories soon after they occurred. I remember issues with her Palm Visor crashing amid the humidity of the Amazon and her helping to evacuate her injured husband from rural China on a hand carried litter. I can only imagine what other adventures awaited her on her travels.

“In 1612, Shakespeare gave evidence in a court case at Westminster—and it is the only occasion on which his actual spoken words were recorded. In The Lodger Shakespeare, Charles Nicholl applies a powerful biographical magnifying glass to this fascinating but little-known episode in the Bard’s life. Drawing on evidence from a wide variety of sources, Nicholl creates a compellingly detailed account of the circumstances in which Shakespeare lived and worked amid the bustle of early seventeenth-century London. This elegant, often unexpected exploration presents a new and original look at Shakespeare as he was writing such masterpieces as Othello, Measure for Measure, and King Lear.”

The lovely collection of instructions and diagrams was first published in 1915 and harkens back to an earlier age when parents and kids would make toys at home instead of buying everything at the store.

I can imagine a farmer sitting around on a rainy day or night putting something together for his son or daughter or even building something more complex for a Christmas gift. There are projects here that can be assembled by a handy boy or girl themselves, too.

You can read the entire book, including illustrations for FREE in a number of different format including an online reader, PDF, ePub, plain text, MOBI and even have the book sent automatically to your Kindle over WiFi.

OpenLIbrary.org has a goal…

“One web page for every book ever published. It’s a lofty but achievable goal. To build Open Library, we need hundreds of millions of book records, a wiki interface, and lots of people who are willing to contribute their time and effort to building the site.

[…]

Open Library is a project of the non-profit Internet Archive, and has been funded in part by a grant from the California State Library and the Kahle/Austin Foundation.”
