“As with gender, the Klan was entirely mainstream in its enthusiastic support of eugenics. Like many prestigious scholars and statesmen, it worried that people of “inferior stock” were reproducing at a higher rate than those of “superior” groups. President Theodore Roosevelt himself had made this danger, labeled “race suicide,” into a national political alarm.”
