2012 Gift Guide: Bon-Aire HN-10C Original Ultimate Hose Nozzle

November 28th, 2012 Comments off

Bon-Aire HN-10C Original Ultimate Hose Nozzle

We have a couple of these hose nozzles here in the garden and love them. Whether you are trying to gently water-in new transplants or blast grit and grime off your boots (or the side of the house) there is a setting on this nozzle. Rather than discrete settings, though, it is an infinitely variable continuum of flow from a light shower to a powerful blast. They are also very rugged and seem none the worse for wear after being outside for a year.

2012 Gift Guide: Wells Lamont Wet and Muddy Latex Coated Gardening Glove

November 28th, 2012 Comments off

Wells Lamont Wet and Muddy Latex Coated Gardening Glove

It is always great to have a pair of these latex-coated gloves around for those wet tasks in the garden. I use them for mixing up potting soil, harvest compost and working in the garden after a recent rain. Sure, we all like to get our hands dirty on occasion, but there are also times we don’t want to have to scrub forever just so we can go back inside.

2012 Gift Guide: Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking

Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking

With interests in both art and business, it seems only natural to combine them in my mind. “Art & Fear” addresses the all-to-common issues with creating art and I believe there are a lot of parallels to any career. Most art is about overcoming fear and it is the same with your career. You need to work through the fear in order to create something wonderful, not matter what you do.

2012 Gift Guide: Dexim Visible Green Smart Charge & Sync Cable

November 27th, 2012 Comments off

Dexim Visible Green Smart Charge & Sync Cable

The Dexim Visible Green Smart Charge & Sync Cable is a great little accessory for your iPod, iPhone and other devices. First, LEDs built into the wire itself show the current charging status at a glance, so you can monitor it even from a distance. More importantly, though, the Visible Green also saves you money. Unlike most chargers, the Visible Green will automatically stop charging your device, and using energy, as soon as the device is fully charged. Most other chargers continue to use power even when it isn’t needed — so-called vampire power — and waste a great deal of electricity.

You find versions of the Visible Green for iPhone, iPods and other smartphones that use the new mini-usb standard cable.

2012 Gift Guide: Olympus PEN E-P1 12 MP Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera

November 26th, 2012 Comments off

Olympus PEN E-P1 12 MP Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera

I purchased this camera back in July of 2011 in preparation for a a family trip to Sicily. I knew I had made the right choice when people started commenting on the first photos I posted to my blogs. While their are more capable — and more expensive — cameras you can buy, the balance of price vs. quality in the EP-1 is great. The optics and depth of field alone dramatically improve the quality of your photos above a typical point-and-shoot camera.

The Auto mode of the camera allows anyone to pick it up and use it, but with program modes, and even full manual, settings, you can begin to experiment with all the settings of the camera to take dramatic photos. I also use the camera to shoot video for my YouTube/Podcast series. It only shoots 720p video, not 1080p, but the superior optics make it the best 720p possible.

You can see many example of the photos I have taken with the camera — and videos, too — by checking out any of my blogs at DouglasEWelch.com.

2012 Gift Guide: High-Tech Fitness Monitors

High-Tech Fitness Monitors

After some recent surgery my doctor gave me an ultimatum. “Get the weight off NOW!”. I was/am having some health complications due to my weight and while I have known I needed to lose the extra weight for years, his order finally got my off my butt and back out walking and working out.

Once I started working out, and monitoring my calorie intake, I wanted to apply some high-tech to the process. It is great to be able to track your actual activity level and calories burned on a regular basis so you can use it in calculations about what to eat, when to work out and how to work out. All three of these devices fit the bill by providing not only a large amount of data and stats, but they also provide social media linkage to share your results, and compete with, your friends and family. In some cases, these devices can also track your sleeping habits and provide some help if you are having issues in that regard.

As is always the case, the easier it is to grab data, the more likely we are to do it. All these devices connect to your computer and the Internet automatically to download and process the data created.

I haven’t made my decision about which device to get just yet, although the BodyMedia FIT LINK Armband comes with a high recommendation from a good friend who is using it. Check out the options available and find the one that works best for you. More importantly, of course, get out there and DO something — TODAY!

Recipes in Rotation: Mild Taco Sauce in the style of Taco Bell

November 25th, 2012 Comments off

Rnr logoRecipes in Rotation is a series that allows me to highlight recipes that have made their way into “the book.” This book is the binder that contains recipes we make on a regular basis. I keep them in this special binder for quick and easy access without sorting through a bunch of other recipes to speed things up when I need to get dinner on the table.

Today’s recipe is a Mild Taco sauce in the style of Taco Bell.

I love Taco Bell mild sauce, but I really shouldn’t be eating there. That said, I found this recipe which comes close to the TB version and gives me a bit of flavor for my own homemade burritos, tacos and nachos. I even love just dipping chips in this sauce and it is very low-cal on its own.

Mild Taco sauce in the style of Taco Bell

(See recipe on Bakespace.com)

Ingredients

1 (14 ounce) cans tomato sauce
2/3 cup water
1 to 2 teaspoon chili powder (to taste)
1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons instant minced onion
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 pinch cayenne pepper (to taste)
1 pinch red pepper flakes (to taste)

Directions

Place all ingredients in a sauce pan and stir well, simmer at a very low temperature for 15- 20 minutes.

Remove and cool.

May be kept in refrigerator for several days, but I susggest freezing half for later use unless you have having a big group of people.
