A scene from the Orto Botanico in the Brera district of Milan

I believe this is a begonia but I didn’t capture any tag for it, so I leave it to you to tell me if I am right or wrong. 😀

This photo is from my second visit to the botanic garden during our trip to Milan last September. I was on my own for the day and wanted to take some more photos. The mosquitos were ferocious, but I got some cool shots.

Shining out against the darkness of the shade in the garden, this hibiscus almost glows.
This garden is hemmed in By buildings on each side and isn’t particularly large, but new vistas were always opening up as you walked about.

Castor Bean Plant (Ricinus communis)

In the Orto Botanico In the Brera District of Milan grows this lovely castor bean including seed pods.

While the seeds are poisonous and the caster bean is an invasive here in Southern California, it is often used as an ornamental in Europe.

Waiting for Spring

In the Orto Botanico In the Brera District of Milan ceramic pots wait for the Spring and new seedlings.

There is such beauty in simplicity sometimes and these pots attracted my attention the minute I spotted them. We were visiting in September, so the Gardener’s has carefully, gathered, cleaned and stored their pots for the Fall and Winter.

I think I wanted to take this picture because it holds such a sense of possibility and potential. I could almost see, in my mind, the plants and flowers that would “spring” from these pots in a few months.

A Shining Sunflower In Milan

In the Orto Botanico In the Brera District of Milan this backlit sunflower shines with the rays of its namesake.

There was so much to see in this rather small garden and I highly recommend that you visit if you are in Milan. Yes, History and architecture is amazing, too, but this is a wonderful compliment and contrast to all the sightseeing.

It also shows the importance of visiting any site at different times of day. My photos from my first and second visit are quite different due to the change in the angle and position of the sun.

Look for this picture to be used on my @Redbubble products very soon, too! Follow @dewdesignphoto on Instagram for more products.

Amaranth (?), Orto Botanico di Brera, Milano, Italia via Instagram

Amaranth (?), Orto Botanico di Brera, Milano, Italia

I had no idea what to expect when visiting this garden hidden away in Milan. I checked it out on Google maps but the foliage hid most of the garden from sight. Still, it seemed intriguing enough for a visit and we were going to be nearby at the Museo del Risorgimento anyway.

The usual entrance, through the Museum of Fine Arts, was closed so it took a bit of walking to get around to another entrance. This led us through a very swanky district and offered up some more great photos, so it was worth it.
The garden was neither small nor large but “just right.” Most everything could be observed from the entrance but paths led here and there into an amazing number of specific areas, including some for edible plants like this amaranth.
The lovely purple flowers and seeds drew me close automatically. It is a sizable plant, so it made quite an impression, even from a distance. Even in the shade the colors shown out brightly.

I was so interested, I returned to the garden a second time when I was in my own and @drrosannewelch was attending the SRN Conference. The mosquitos were fierce within the shady and damp environment but I persevered for another hour or so of photography.
