Amy Baumann gardens in San Dimas and works as a volunteer at the California Botanic Garden in Claremont. She sent an email asking if I could recommend “books that focus on California native plants that do well in containers.” While I didn’t have a title to recommend, we have run stories on that topic in this newspaper and there is an excellent discussion of this subject under the “Patio and Container Gardens” rubric, authored by Pete Veilleux, that you can find it on the California Native Plant Society website (cnps.org). There is also a list of “Native Plants that are Happy in Containers” compiled by the Theodore Payne Foundation (theodorepayne.org). Las Pilitas Nursery (laspilitas.com) lists more than 50 California natives that are recommended for container growing in full sun, even where temperatures reach 95 degrees during the summer.
