The End

After 3 years of sharing my gardening experiences I regret to say that this will be the last edition of A Gardener’s Notebook. While my gardening will continue, writing projects come and go and this must go to make room for new projects in the New Year.

I will continue to maintain the AGN archive on my web site at: http://www.welchwrite.com/agn/ but the AGN mailing list will be discontinued near the end of January 2001.

Happy Holidays!

"'Twas the night before Christmas,

and all through the house,

a garden writer was scurrying,

Fast as a mouse…"

While I probably owe many apologies to Clement Moore it is, at least, the truth. Relatives have descended upon the house, packages are overflowing the space beneath the (oh no, truth be told, artificial!) tree and my 2 year-old, Joe, is totally entranced by Christmas this year. You can imagine the state of affairs in the Welch household tonight.

Last Minute Gift Ideas

Tis the season to do anything but work in your garden. Most of you probably have many inches of snow covering your garden by this time so your gardening fancies must be fulfilled in other ways. Even if you don't get snow in your location, the rainy season will keep all but the most dedicated gardeners indoors. In an effort to assuage your gardening angst and offer a few ideas for this gift giving season, here are some of my favorite books for gardeners.

The party is coming!

It is at this time of year when I most truly wish I was a farmer. Each year, for the last 7 or 8, my wife, Rosanne, and I have hosted a holiday open house. The most special part of this party is that I bake between 70 and 80 dozen cookies in about 20 different varieties. The reason for the farmer wish above is I really would love to be able to put more of my own garden products into my cookies.

A Poppy Grows

I first noticed it when I walked out to my car yesterday morning. Among the grass that usually invades my flower beds I saw a small seedling. The lighter green of its delicate stem and leaves was enough contrast to draw my eye. The California poppies I had broadcast weeks ago were starting to sprout.

Joshua Tree National Park

It seems like my life is conspiring to expose me to every possible climate available in the Western US. After 2 weeks in Salt Lake City, Utah and a week back home in Los Angeles, the whole family was off to our annual Thanksgiving spot, Palm Desert, California, where one of my sisters resides. We have been from the mountains, to the sea, to the desert, all in one month.

Settling In

Was it a dream? Only yesterday it seemed I was watching snow fall and my breath steam. Today I could have been dressed in shorts and enjoying a cool lemonade. It is always odd to travel from one extreme to another and this week seemed intent on driving that point home. Back in Los Angeles I am resettling into a warmer climate, but a more hectic schedule.

What a difference a week makes

The title says it all. Still in Salt Lake City, Utah on business I have witnessed the early arrival of what should prove to be a very profitable Winter for the Utah Ski Resorts.

Along the Wasatch

Away from my own small home and garden this week, I sit looking out over Salt Lake City, Utah from the 22nd floor of a downtown condo, the very antithesis of my usual arrangements when I am writing this column. Snow drifts past the wide windows and fuzzes the lights of the city. A heavy snow was predicted for last night but all we received was a sprinkling with no accumulation at all. The temperature hasn’t dropped very low, barely dipping below freezing in the middle of the night.

Weather...or not

Oh, how I love the rain. While all the media mavens in Los Angeles are bemoaning the loss of the precious sunshine I am truly basking in it. I stand at the back door and listen to the rain on the tin patio cover. I keep the door open, even though it is in the 50’s, so I can smell the fresh, damp air as I cook dinner.

Wind in the Willow

A warm but blustery day brings even more feelings of the growing Autumn. The wisteria leaves are yellowing and dropping as it recedes into its winter’s rest. Most of the other deciduous trees in my corner of California are also turning and today’s winds send them floating to the ground in cascades of yellow and brown.

Getting it together

There are many ways to spur you into making improvements in your garden, but, as was the case a few months ago, inviting a large group of people into my garden has given me the impetus to move things around and add a little bit more.
