Wade Graham explores what four hundred years of garden making in America reveal about our values, politics, and dreams, and how our evolving relationship with Nature in our gardens forms a unique window onto the continuing process of fashioning a national identity in his newly-published book, American Eden: From Monticello to Central Park to our Backyards, What Our Gardens Tell Us About Who We Are (HarperCollins 2011). This social history of gardens in America is an expansive and penetrating exploration of how our evolving relationships with our gardens and landscapes have reflected our national identity over the course of time.

In Conversation is a brown bag luncheon series sponsored by ICW. These events are open to any who wish to attend so please feel free to bring your own lunch and join us.

One of my client’s has an amazing home office set amid this equally as amazing garden. I was visiting for a computer support call today and asked if I could take a few pictures to share with you.The garden is Asian-themed and is such a peaceful spot even in the midst of the San Fernando Valley. I could imagine myself working quite happily in this garden.

My Minecraft Garden

My son is a huge Minecraft fan — and a bit of an expert — so I am trying to get him to give me some secrets of Minecraft. With the little time I have in-game, I decided to see if I could use it to do a little playing and maybe even some planning.

Here is my small stab at a little Minecraft gardening. I have put in some pumpkins, melons and even a small stand of wheat their in the back. (LAUGH)

I am going to work up a video of my playing around and maybe give you some ideas how you can use Minecraft yourself.

Mulch Project Finished

Remember that hug pile of mulch we had dropped off last weekend?

Gone!

All the paths in both the front and back gardens, as well as the side of our driveway are now covered with a good level of mulch that should last for at least 2 seasons. We need to take a bit more off that stack on the side of the driveway there, but that is more a case of raking into the rest of the area than actually carting it around.

It actually took less time that I thought it might. The backyard took the longest due to the need to move the mulch farther using the wheelbarrow. The front yard took a fraction of the time as it was simply closer to the mulch pile. It was also a smaller area to cover.

Would I do this again? Probably, although I think I would hire a couple of guys to help us move around the mulch and spend more time supervising myself. It was a big job, but good to know that between myself, my wife and my son, we were able to get it done in a relatively short time. Total actually work time over 2 weekends was probably about 6 hours.

Photo: Carrots emerging

We trying out a method of planting small bunches of carrots in deep vertical containers. We don’t really have a good ground plot for carrots, so this container allows us to have decent, soft soil and move it around to get the best sunlight. Right on cue, the seedlings emerged about 2 days ago. I’ll report further as they develop.
