DIY Recycle: Coffee Can bird feeder

A very nice recycle use of a coffee can for a bird feeder. I especially like the use of the lids as the seed retainers. With paint or without, I think it would be a pleasant addition to your garden and a great, easy project to do with kids.

Is there a #GardenCamp in your future?

If you follow any of my other blogs or projects, you know that I love the idea of an unconference. An unconference is attendee organized and everyone is highly encouraged to present something during the day. The schedule is created the morning of the event and then everyone dives in. There is so much great, local, knowledge in most towns and cities and an unconference can help to bring out that information and share it with others.

#GardenCamp?

So, let me float the idea here of a GardenCamp unconference here in the Los Angeles area!

I would love to get together with other gardeners and hear what they have to say about their favorite gardening topics. There are a lot of great organizations here that might be potential partners for the event — providing space, providing sponsorship funding and maybe even providing a few speakers and attendees for the day.

Are you interested in putting together a gardening unconference here in LA or in your own local area? Let me know in the comments to this post or via email at agn@welchwrite.com. If there is enough interest I will set up a dedicated mailing list that we can use to get the ball rolling. I would especially like to here from organizations, gardens and garden-related businesses here in LA that might be interested in hosting such an event.

I love when someone puts the iPhone to good use. Here is one that uses the Internet access, camera and GPS to help your explore your world.

Project Noah is directed at kids, but I think anyone would find it interesting. You take photos and tag plants and wildlife along your travels and share them with other Project Noah users. Having trouble with identification? No problem, post it anyway and let the community help you figure it out.

My friend, Keri, has created an excellent “Bee Box” for her garden. Read the entire article at her site.

“I’ve been wanting to do this for over a year, build a nesting box for native bees and other insects. My friend Doug Welch from A Gardener’s Notebook had sent me various plans and ideas. I had a wooden wine box with a sliding lid and it seemed perfect.”

# 7 Coppertop Caged Bird Feeder

Birds and other wildlife are an important part of any garden. Why not give them an attractive place to feed? I have a similar bird feeder in my garden and it has stood up will to the harsh, sunny, conditions better than any plastic feeder. UV light damages plastics over time, but this copper feeder has no such issues. It is also easier to clean than a plastic feeder.

I spotted this swarm hive in this business sign at 5800 Van Nuys Blvd while we were out for out daily walk a week or so ago. The bees were concentrated around the point where the pole meets the sign, so I am guessing the hive is in the sign itself. I informed the manager of the lot about this group, but I am guessing these bees are in danger of extermination if something isn’t done quickly.

I posted an email to our local Backwards Beekeepers group here in Los Angeles in hopes that someone might be able to come out and save the bees for a members hive.
